looking good piggy Laughing
how come you have made a huge seat box it looks like on the pic that the edge of the seat is right next to the roll hoop (if it is wont that put your upper body outside the cage)

the seats are not fixed in position at the mo,

this thing is sooooo narrow there is not a lot of room for the upper body, i may need to stop eating for a while, the seat will be inset from the rear hoop by 40mm at most, i will put a bend on the door bar at sholder height to widen the frame another few mm, it looks looks another cold elbow

the seat boxes are 175mm off of the chassis floor, i did this just to get some kind of driving position, i dont know if it was a good move, but there is really no room for anything to fit in the chassis, its even tight for a pair of kirkey seats, no chance of fitting ordinary buckets

i have removed the landrover axels and started to fit 404 axles f/r, i have a 110 front axel cut and welded to allow the pumpkin to be the right side if anybody wants rear steer, so back tracked a lot, but after seeing the spiders at the eurotrial, going landrover would be a bad idea

With spherical bearings they can go at more or less any angle as long as they don't bind. They have limited articulation on 2 axis, but unlimited rotation on the 3rd axis. Try tack welding mounts on and then cycling the suspension up and don't the check the bearings don't bind at any positions. Adjust as necessary until you find a position and angle that works. The optimum position and orientation will vary with the suspension design.

me and fred are getting confused,

if you look for pics of spiders on internet, you will see that the front axel has been flipped, i,e the flat bottom of the diff case is now at the top, any ideas as to the pinion rotation of the diff, i would really like both axles to turn the same way, it would be rather embarrassing if the front turned one way and the rears the other. i have the rear mounted and from the back looking forward the pinion turns anticlockwise which is ok, we cant work out if you flip the axle what way it will turn, any ideas?

its as easy as flipping the axle (four bolts to each nuckle to rotate them 180) then roll the axle forwards note direction pinion rotates if it turns clock wise looking from the front then it should be correct for the fwd gearbox it not as you got to cut the nuckles to flip like on the 411 axles and if its not right why would every pic i sent you of 404 spiders all do the same

calm down, young man.

i know all the pics show it that way, and last night you could not be sure either. i just cant see how it is right, if it super duper, but as i have not got a front axle at the moment i cant do the test, i was hoping that the other spider builders could reassure me

its because you using a welded diff from a car. .sorry poorly explained but its early lol. The mogs want to spin the pinions the same way as you look at thd transfer box ie clockwise, anti clockwise. But your welded diff will want to turn on pinion counter clockwise and the other clockwise.hth

that was my calm answer Wink(i thought you got your pair of 404's
but as mine is using the 411 axle i dont get the easy option i have to cut the axle tubes to flip the front
if i get time over the weekend il build my front up and try it for you

ps i missed a bit out of the first post "dont forget to actuate the locker before pulling the nuckle accembly apart (it will save you having to strip the diff to put the locker collor/shoes back into the diff)

trying to remove the portal boxes, undone the four 24mm bolts under the spring mount, this is on the rear axle, the boxes wont budge, looks like there are four dowels, two top and two bottom, but are they split as they look like a roll pin, any ideas?

yep they are locating dowl pins tha are quite tight if you look at the top of the spacer(the cast part that replaces the nuckles) theres a reccess you can drive a wedge in to force them apart dont for get the locker unless your stripping it down fully

ok smarty pants's, the axel is flipped over so the pumpkin is the right side, portal box down, with the engine in foward motion the rear axel goes foward but sadly the front goes backwards, why is this? so therefore minimog what do the spider people do

Wink guess it must be a secret between the spider owners
because the front and rear share the same diff/case so would there be any point in using a rear diff in the front
your other option is to cut and do a diff offset swap

just a shot in the dark, take the diff out and flip it 180 degrees so the crown wheel is on the other side? might need to cut the front cover off and weld it back on upside down

Ali: The difflock will be on the wrong side for the long splines on the half shaft if you just turn the diff upside down. That's why minimog says about the offset swap. Those portal Rockwells we swapped the locker on with long splines on both shafts, reversible diff head and no pinion conversion are looking pretty good to me right now. Smile

all sorted, thanks to unimogler, you just swap the crown wheel over to the other side of the pinion
