All the real Lars Dahl spiders have coils In the Eurotrial and Scandinavian rock crawler world there are many copy's - and the real spider got the top 3 places in Eurotrial Sweden last year showing Lars to be one of the best builders and driver of proto cars ever - so far ?
http://www.westcoastspiders.com/
and 200 - piggy was for the set - my mate has a set for-sale (new) but in Sweden and he will send them over if you want them ?

i now have the engine and auto box sitting in the chassis, i will make the mounts tommorrow evening, sadly it looks like i will have to compleatly remove the autobox from the engine and seperate the box to get to the diff to weld it, have any of you ot a haynes manule, so you can post the bits covering the auto box diff

I would seriously doubt a Haynes manual would cover the opening of the transmission, they don't usually go that deep.
you'll want a ford manual.

the auto box diff is all finished, its welded and a band has been put arround the carrier to strengthen it, it was easy to take apart and put back together, i will see if i have broken anything when i get the zetec fired up.
i am starting to do the rear axel now, it will be rear steer, i have a 110 front axel, now should i just turn and flip the axel to get the pumpkin the right side or cut it up and reweld it the right way round

they used to cover everything, but now they seam to have taken a step back, with lot's of "refer to specialist" type comments.
with the rear axle, is it possible to flip axle over and rotate the diff 180 degrees so that it's the right way up?

tecknicaly yes, although when i was looking at it, when you think of turning the arms etc and making it all etc its not as easy in practise as in theory, however on something on this its not the biggest thing on your mind i doubt if you werent running forward/backward props from the gearbox, i would consider using a g-wagon t-box, the early ones the front prop turns the wrong way, its also a stand alone unit like an sj t-box, so in theory it can be bolted up to most things.
oh, build is sounding great!!

I'd expect on a project like this though the axles will probally be stripped down and a custom set up used. Although if sticking with a standard setup I think u can buy all the weld on mounts

the axel is cut and rewelded so the pumpkin is on the drivers side,
i have nearly finished the mounts,
insert spanner,
a mate came over for a look and said why did i not get the gearbox center to the chassis in length, i could not answer, so should i center the mondeo outputs bearing in mind that the engins has been turned so the offside drive shaft is pointing to the front diff, therefore the engine is in front of the gearbox, i have the gearbox about 300mm foward of center, the wheelbase is 100", so the engine is well back of the front axel, what says you lot

if you look at the spiders the rear uses a 2 piece shaft with a center bearing to lign up the prop shaft to the rear diff

no I wouldnt. on the spiders, front of engine is just back enough to clear suspension/movement. your car will climb better with more weight to the front and the further forward it is the easier it will be for the rearprop to function....
WE NEED our pics fix

sorry piggy was giving you the soloution to keeping the engine centered
the central mass of the engine is centered on the spider if you off set it so the gearbox was centered to ballence out the uneven wieght you would need a very hevy navigator or a driver that is very light
(so every time you want to climb say a rock it would slide to the hevier side )it would also have more side slope abillity on one
side
if your going to copy a spider chassis you might aswell keep as close to a completed one as possible as its been tried and tested (ok if your not planning on portals then you will loose the ground clearance but gain a little c/g)

ok dudes i'll try to explain, the chassis is as our high lord lars intended, the issue that has surfaced is concerning how far back the engine sits, if you look at the chassis pics, my crank pulley is about 300 to 350 mm back from the front bumper box, this makes the center of the gearbox 300mm foward of center line of the whole chassis for length, the engine and box is center between the driver and co driver, it also makes the front prop 75 to 100 mm shorter than standard lr90, but i could just move the front axel foward

The spider cabs have always been tight for space and getting the seat right and more so the narrowness of where the pedals are - so remember this when you fit the engine - spiders are not great hill climbers so get the engine as far forward as the axle will allow and this will also give more pedal space - we need more pics

That tractor ball isn't suitable for that application It's too thin in the neck for the side loads of a front wheel impact. It's only designed for end-on loads!
Your doing is what I frequently do, and going one-saving too many
If you get the other ball, off the arm end, it would be a lot better.
Interesting build though. Looking forward to seeing it develope over the weeks

Spiders vary a little but most are under 240 - Tommy's is 237 wheelbase

they use large sperical bearings
tractor joint no way not even on a landy axle (i asked x eng about using one of his joints and he said unless it was exsteemly light he wouldent recomend it and after seeing their suzuki based one rip its front axle off first outing (single link + panhard rod)i would consider something a bit more robust
what about a creeper joint from trail gear (they do a m18 one with a 1" 1/4 shank)
or a large poly bush/sleave (say a l/r radius arm bush) with a large bolt welded to it (or the drawing for the 1 link bush is also on the same site)

This is a very interesting build.
Grader ball is probably suitable for this application or something similar.
More pics please!

Tractor top link joints will stretch on the threads as well - i used one on the portals i had but had to weld up the threads as made the axle flop about to much but it moved okay giving good travel
some of the class 1's mods in the awdc use this joint to good effect
It's what you can afford to do ? X eng are expensive and not tested on this type of A frame joint as far as i know - Danny on here is the first ? so go with what you made maybe weld the threads and give it a go
You can always up date it later on
