I'm assuming OEC international has an actual building that it's run out of?
Build your own server and run it off that!
50Mbps connection and a relatively good dual core PC would be able to handle difflock, OEC and whatever else you wanted!
It would cost a lot less than £6kpa...

The £6k was a quote from 3 years ago, I have no idea of the cost now.
Why not give Anton a call and chat it through with him - you might get a free subscription for your help

Well,
Funny you say that... I am looking at setting up a business in that field.
I was looking at setting up a server farm... the initial cost it quite high, but once the customers are there it seems like quite a good earner!
I've got 3 servers at home at the minute, but I'm only running 1 of them, and the others are kind of redundant...
I know someone from the next village down who was earning £15k when he was 17... just from servers stacked in his converted, air conditioned garage .
Obviously you need the know how to run them, but it's more a case of -
Is it worth the effort and what's the customer base like at the minute...

that assumes you have somebody in the company that is able to run it and sort stuff out, sometimes it is easier and cheaper to outsource.

TBH, if it was me, I would rather pay the fees and get something that is based at a properly secured location with all the neccessary resilience and redundancy and not just a pile of servers in someone's garage/bedroom/barn!

lol that was when he was 17... mostly gaming servers.
He's got a proper premises now, secure site in a well maintained and guarded industrial estate, running all blade servers.
The security guards thought I was trying to break in first time I went there and parked outside in my muddy, battered SJ
He doesn't do web hosts though, unless you want a dedicated server for it
That's where the real money is. Get a load of people renting blade servers for a few years each and you're sorted

The acid test will be when/how many of the adverts are companies other than the internal link with OEC International.

The current forum costs are well in excess of 6k per year...
we have been getting quotes for well over the passed 6 months.
initially every man and their trusty dog tell me its a piece of cake! then we meet, interrogate the back end, look at the size of the database - all but a few companies can meet the demand.
not with standing the users, threads - there is a phenominal amount of images and data stored. the last thing we want to do is loose any of this. i have seen the comments about when some images were lost when we were hacked into about 6 months ago and the thought of loosing any data fills me with dread.
the solution isnt straight forward - there is different levels of requirements - from the database to the in / out postings.
the current quotations are an annual salary! literally. i am sure we will find the right solution for the medium term.
i dont want to committ to anything that will have the same issues in 6 months.
furthermore - show me an IT / server hosting company that will guarantee anything works without a problem (ie loosing data etc) and i will eat my hat. as it said - they are all dead keen for the work (especially in the current climate) and when we get into the nitty gritty - it all gets a little grey!
the acid test of pays who doesnt?
We wouldnt have invested if there wasnt companies already contacting difflock... the companies refer to ALL users ALL Makes and Models.

I just wanted to say thank you to Anton for being so open and frank during this discussion and also for taking onboard people comments.
It makes a nice change to see 'behind the scences' even slightly, and to know that the powers that be are doing their best to keep us all here in one place!

I'll swap you for my 3TB of unbacked up data and info (and growing fast enough to annoy the Engineering Manager who does the IT).

Our latest SQL server replaced 2 older ones, has 2x 2TB hard disks in it, and a 250GB system disk... and it's pretty much full all ready!!!
That's just customer dbs as well, we have our own dbs and development stuff on a seperate server!!!

The main problem's probably that you allow users to upload their own pics to the site. A picture is worth a thousand words...in more ways than one. So it will have a dramatic impact on storage requirement and bandwidth consumed.
However, it would be very difficult to take something away from the users, now that its been given (for free).

i`d slow down a bit then. it all looks fine now, good balance of eye-catching pics , but unobtrusive layout.
Good work and a huge improvement.

and the same people keep missing the same points.
we know its for the best, we know its happened before and we know that everyone knows.
that wasnt the issue. noone said it wasnt for the best. we just said that it looked poo. now anton and team have sorted the minor glitches and it all looks good.
but i do love the way the same people keep saying the same party line, over and over again, in a slowly repetitive way, trying to soothe away those ills.
said softly "it will all be better soon, soon you will not notice, go about your business, these are not the droids you are looking for"

Whilst most of the "old hands" know the score it does no harm to inform the newer members.
Also, some of the posts were far from constructive and again needed to be reminded of the "party line"
