I'm in favour of generating extra revenue for you guys and all that...

at least even it up a tad and put them both sides closer to the forum by reducing the borders.

Good idea though!

If you reduced the borders, you could get all the ads up the side spread across the top...

Unless you've already got a deal to show the top/bottom ad twice...

its not that bad - better than the other option of putting your hand in your pocket and paying for a subscription.

Maybe! but not when you loose 1/4 of the screen, On my phone it takes up about 1/3 of the screen.

I just dont really see the need for it to take up that much of the screen width.

what was wrong with banners at the top and bottom of the screen?

There's not much in the Difflock shop for zookies though...
I will buy a sticker at some point though Wink

Oh... easy fix for you...

Look in:
"templates/SubSilver/ViewForum_Body.tpl"
and
"templates/SubSilver/ViewTopic_Body.tpl"

This will leave a 5px gap on each side of the images...
Either that or try "width=200" for a little bit extra

Using a low resolution monitor and with a picture 800 pixel or wider in the thread, the side adverts effectively disappear off the screen (obviously doesn't make much difference to people with bigger monitors). If the adverts were on the other side then it would be very irritating though having to keep scrolling across to see larger pictures.

It doesn't help though that every time I look at a thread I have to scroll down to know its there now that the forum header and adverts take up pretty much a whole screen. Better than a subscription though.

It's the yellow banner... the rest looks ok but it does kind of squeeze the forum over to the left.

I don't see why a subscription would ever be needed, forums cost hardly anything to run and its not like oec international can't afford it!

Most forums that charge an optional subscription use it to fund events etc. and/or pay insurance for those events. sites like pirate use it for pirate4x4 tv and all the things they put back into American offroading like land use campaigns and events likes koh.

Im sure I'm not the only one thinking that either.

Another issue is that it will increase the amount of

PHPBB3: Critical Error
Could not connect to database.

Every time a user loads a topic page, or the main page, it's going to initiate a connection to the database per advert image it loads.

I've been battling against the error message for like 10 minutes now Confused

Been having those errors for a while now. But more of them today.

Apart from that, the new look is not realy bothering me at all.
Give it a while and it will seem normal.

if you are going to quote figures these should be put into context...i.e. how long / position / section.

for example you could equally have stated that if someone wanted to advertise for 12 months the cost is £2.00/day for a side advert...

it depends on the reaction sought from referencing figures

Sorry anton, I just put in a month for each...
Are the figures right on the form? I just looked at 12-month top/bottom banners and it came up:

£8955.00

Oh... that's the home page ad space

but that works out at £24.53 a day

Side ad seems to work out £2.44/day over a 12 month period

They cost a lot more than you think and given the popularity of Difflock bandwidth useage would high (with associated costs). It would be nice to live off of somebody else but somebody has to pay at some point.

time to head off to the shop.

But could we not go back to the adverts that appeared across the screen like in the old days?

I do know how much they cost I help to run one Very Happy Yes I can understand difflock is a very busy forum (huge compared to the one I help with), but still i doubt its a huge amount that isn't easily covered with the income from the difflock shop, especially now its owned by a company like oec international. The forum cost a probably a tiny spec on the companies outgoings every year.

I see we all agree that the old advertising set up was better though.

nope, never said that Not talking

the ads work, i`ve seen some stuff there that i will look into more, so they are doing their job, just needs tweaking a bit.

and i`m stuffed all ways as i use a 24" widescreen monitor set to 1920x1080.

so if you think they are annoying on a 19" monitor...........

off to look at a readywelder now. dont need one as such but the pic says i do Laughing Laughing
