|
|
|
Might sound stupid but is there anything I can do to reduce the noise from some new tyres I've just put on my vehicle? (apart from take them off of course!)
They're new M/Ts and I've never known anything noisier on the road. Had them fitted as I have to go across fields everyday sometimes with trailers and the ATs were worn out and didn't give much traction when pulling on with the trailer.
I do have to use the vehicle for some occasional motorway journeys and after an hour's trip my ears were humming! Painful too.
Apart from wearing ear defenders what else can i do? any soundproofing available for the vehicle itself?
Turning up the radio helps hide the noise but it's the constant hum I can't live with!
Vehicle is a Freelander 2001 TD4.

Wear the ear defenders Works great, and leaves you refresshed at end of journey (trick discovered driving S1 landy to Wales from Midlands)
Other than that, it could be harmonising in body. What about ramming the inside back body cavities with rock-wool or the like?

I went from Shropshire to the Lake District recently in my old Fourtrack Indy with Goodyear Wrangler MT's on it and there was very little tyre noise. I've got Cooper Discoverer MT's on it now and they're even quieter. Very good tyre alltogether.

What pressure do you run them at? Other than ear defenders cant really think of much else, my concern with using rock wool is if it gets damp it could turn the cavity into a rust trap.

I bought a 1998 Disco in B'ham and drove it to Leek with Insa Mud Tyres on. It was the worsy journey of my life!! The fillings in my teeth vibrated loose. Got home and spoke to tyre man and he said get rid and use ATs. They're great. Sold the MTs on ebay and used the money to get my fillings back!!

What make and model of tyres are they? I run BFG muds on the 110 an 90 and there is very little road noise from them

I think they were Insa Saharas. Very noisey and vibrated. I asked the tyre man to balance them and he refused saying they wouldn't balance. Brilliant for serious offroading but not soo good for tarmac.

Watched a tyre guy balance a set of Insa sahara's last friday. They went on D2 steel wheels.5 tyres needed 8 balance weights between them the largest being 50 grams. As for noise the girl commutes between Cambridge and Oxford daily, the vehicle is a D2 V8, and she tells me they are quiter then the Cepeks she had on it before.
Horse for Courses, but she's happy with them.

They are 4x4 Specials from some Japanese company I've never heard of.
If you PM me your email address I can send you a photo of them - never got the hang of uploading pics on this site - hence the random avatar of Jethro 'borrowed' from the internet.
They are inflated to standard tyre pressure for my vehicle.
Will update more after i've looked at the tyres more closely!
One other thing though...
Is it my imagination or has the fuel consumption dropped considerably since I put them on? Definitely feels like it.
With the price of diesel the way it is I'm not sure I can afford to run the vehicle anymore anyway, let alone on thirsty tyres!

Aggressive patterned tyres will use more fuel.

& fitting tyres of a larger diameter than standard will change your Revs & gearing a bit,
not always a bad thing,
depends on the vehicle & its use.
Fitting larger, even slightly larger than standard size/diameter tyres might actually make your Speedo & milometer read more accurately,
but its highly unlikely to give exactly the same reading as a smaller tyre.

I have worn out two sets of bfg mud terrains ( 30,000/set ) these were not to bad for noise, one set of new american non branded tyres (20,000/set), these had a similar pattern to the bfg but were way quieter and my current set are insa dakars - mud terrain copys - cheap but very noisy untill they bed in, then they are not to bad - for the price. I think you get what you pay for. I have a mate with cooper mud terrains and he says that ther are noisier than his general grabber at's, but ok.
