my friend bought a hsp 1:8th rock crawler and his back wheels have just locked up, i was wondering if any of you might know what to look at first, my first thought was diff but not sure

Diff.... sounds like you got it already... otherwise look and driveshafts etc...

It could be broken driveshaft thats locked it up. Best way is to strip the rear axle apart, there are only a few components in it so whatever is causing the lock up will be easy to spot.
