Dear Chairman,

I am sure that you will already be aware of the coalition government’s consultation paper regarding the proposed sell-off of Forestry Commission land. This is a very serious issue that has the potential to impact on UK motor sport at every level.

Motor sport needs to mobilise all its forces as soon as possible to urge the government to re-think its proposals and we would be grateful if you could communicate this to your membership.

We need as many people as possible not only to complete the government’s online consultation process (www.forestry.gov.uk), but also to contact their Member of Parliament. To support this, the attached briefing document outlines the position of motor sport in respect of the consultation, and there is also a draft letter that can be used to write to the MPs.

As ever, we are grateful for your support. Rest assured that in the meantime the MSA continues to make its case directly to the MPs, special advisors and civil servants within Westminster.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Kind regards,

Colin Hilton
Chief Executive

Dear [insert name of MP],

I am writing to you as my local Member of Parliament to register my objection to the proposed sell-off or leasing of the public forest estate in England.

There are a number of reasons why these proposals are misguided, many of which have been well documented in the recent media coverage of this topic. However, my specific concern is to do with the use of Forestry Commission land for the purposes of officially organised motor sport events, in particular stage rallying.

The enclosed briefing paper provides an outline of the sport and its use of the forest estate in England. It also underlines the enormous benefit that motor sport brings to UK plc as well as to the local communities that host events.

In 2010, motor sport contributed a total of £825,000 to the Forestry Commission for access to the forests for a total of 41 events, 31 of which were stage rallies. In addition to this, the secondary spend of competitors, spectators and other visitors represents important revenue for the local communities and businesses in these areas – estimated at up to £2m for some events.

Much of this will be under threat should the proposed changes to the management of the public forest estate in England be approved by Parliament.

If you require further information about motor sport and the Forestry Commission, may I suggest that you contact Colin Hilton, Chief Executive, Motor Sports Association, Riverside Park, Colnbrook, SL3 0HG who is leading the MSA’s public affairs activity on this issue.

In the meantime, I look forward to your response on this issue.

Yours sincerely
