Hi all,

Last sunday I went offroading at Peas Farm in the rain which is essentially a mud hill, the tyres on my Disco were useless and I needed to be recovered... a lot!

I have an old ratchet strap from a lorry which is ok for small weights but when recovering something realy stuck, the ratchet let go of the strap.

I was wondering if anyone could reccommend any good ropes and the best places to get them, I was thinking about getting a kinetic rope...

Any reccommendations?

Cheers

First recommendation is to get some decent training, via say your local 4x4 club.

Ratchet straps are designed to hold loads down, they are not designed for recovering vehicles!

Kinetic ropes can be dangerous in untrained hands.

Just google KERR recoveries and you will see some horror stories.

Learn the difference between tow ropes/straps and recovery straps/ropes

Tow ropes as supplied by the motoring shops are basically useless for vehicle recoveries

Tow straps are made from POLYESTER and are good for towing but NOT suitable for recovery where an element of snatch is involved as high shock loads will be experienced. Polyester should have a safety factor of 7:1. Avoid ebay el cheapos like the plague

RECOVERY OR KINETIC straps are made from NYLON and are suitable for snatch recoveries.

KERR or KINETIC ENERY RECOVERY ROPES are made from nylon (plaited) and are dangerous in the wrong hands especially if recovery points are iffy.

24mm nylon 3 strand ropes are not as stretchy as KERR

Before buying equipment get some training, understand the dangers and forces involved.

Ensure recovery points are safe and reliable. Use rated equipment.

Buy your gear from people who understand what you wnt to do. Your local 4x4 shop, Bertie on here or ourselves can point you in the right direction.

Just remember vehicle recovery can be dangerous, use good safe equipment and good safe techniques and things stand a reasonable chance of a safe recovery.

Use bad gear and bad techniques then it is only a matter of time before things go badly ewrong, vehicles are damaged or people land up in hosital or a wooden box

Thanks for the quick reply.

I know the ratchet strap is for securing loads but it was the only thing I had to hand at the time!

I see what you mean about KERR being dangerous without training. The only ways people got unstuck on sunday was either with a Kerr or winch, and i don't intend to spend several hindred pounds on a winch I'll only use occasionally!

but as you say, its far better to spend some time doing things right, its quicker than ending up in hospital!

Thanks a lot!

lol i was there in a blue sj that was parked up for most of the day with a ****** fuel pump,

i use a knetic rope 8 meter. honestly i would never use any other rope again, it works a treat up there, with every1 getting bogged down in thick mud. im suprised you did not see it in action i spent most the day as a passanger in a disco getting recovered by it lol

If used properly KERR ropes are very good but they are dangerous if the recovery driver hairs off at "high speed", the rope like a bit elastic band and then contracts. If the recovery points are weak they can be pulled off and catapulted through the air.

Bert will help you although he is busy just now, if you can't get in touch with him drop me a line and I will get him for you.

Just remember that oft forgotten bit of recovery gear. A shovel

Can often reduce force required to extract a vehicle by use of a spade/shovel

My preferred method of recovery is winch doubled lined.

Otherwise a recovery strap

As said above, in the right hands and with solid recovery points the KERR is a good recovery tool...

A bit of guidence from some of the old schoolers will keep you right on the use in a safe controlled manner...

You will be supprised how little speed will pull you out....

I was suprised at how many zuks were out there the other day, they all did better than my yellow disco which was just too heavy.

I do have a shovel in the back just incase which is great for when you are stuck on your own, thats why i have the ratchet strap to pull myself out without a winch if im on my own
