right... well im looking for a bit of advice. for a while now we have been looking for a tow vehicle that will be able to take both vehicles to an event, and i think we may have found a sullution, theres one local, £500, not sure of condition, although apparently the wiring needs sorting. unsure of to what extent though..
is it worth £500? what are the towing capabilties (legally... ) and are there any good diesil convertions, the v8 sounds good but a 7mg (apparently) could make it costly, even on gas...
thanks

They're a french attempt at a unimog, but with only a rear locker. I'd have thought the towing capacity was high.

Is that the one with a Ford Flathead V8 or SimcaMarmon version of the same? They were about that money years ago when they were first released, replaced by the Renault TRM2000 (i think).

Take the flat head out, sell to the classic tractor guys for a fortune (!!) drop in a bigger diesel and you'll have a free truck.
I nearly bought one instead of the 404 a few years back. Nicer to drive, good off road, good tow wagon (licence depending), but thirsty with that v8.

well tonight we were over "taking some andy axles off a lany (not drinking coffee and talking about what we could do with lots of money... ) and my cousin thinks hes found a merc 6 pot 6 speed thats in a small lorry which with the simca crawler box would probably be ok for £100 if we go and take it out before the guy scraps it.. would that be a good lump for it?

Is the engine out of an 814, there ok, just make sure you change the oil and filters often, the simca is a good strong beast and will give years of service even when mistreated, concidered one myself, but got a volvo tgb20 6x6 instead...
keep us posted on the conversion

500 is pretty cheep, my mate just sold his for a fair bit more! on ebay the axles will be worth about that each, and as said the v8 will be worth more again.
they seem easy enough to get parts for, the diesel would be the way to go only thing needs watching is rust and oil leaks, oh and you need to invest in some bigger tools like a jack and a bigger hammer

I see that RR Motor Services have a few that were re-engined in 99 by the Renault factory with 3.8 diesels and new boxs.Whether or not they are worth the £5k they want for them i don't know.

hmm, theres another one round here for 250, but the one for 500 is in much better nick. im tempted with the one for 250 just for the axles to go under the landy or zooki but i thought you could buy them off the millitary for 2500 so i thought most people would buy them that way, but if theyre getting that kind of money it might be worth it
ultimately it my dads choice, i could only just get the one for 250, and the one we're seriousley looking into would be for towing the trucks to events...

Simca axles will be far too heavy for a Zook. I have a pair sat in my workshop and they make Mog 404 axles seem lightweight!
If you decide not to get either one of them, can I be cheeky and ask you to PM me details of them please? I've fancied a sumb for a while but seem to miss all the rerasonably priced ones.
Paul.

I'm moving some axles around the workshop tomorrow, so I'll take a few snaps to show you just how big they are.

Ones iv seen where tax and mot exempt so big plus, a good one is worth about 2 grand, the flat head v8 is a clasic and would be easy to sell on, the portal axles make them great off road and they can go in deeper water standard then some snorkels.
All so known as a Sumb Marmon.
