Good set up for a little SJ.
Warn is the way to go, but you pay alot for this!!
If money was not a problem I would buy a Gigglepin GP82 Winch!!

I have twin T max's on my SJ and have had no issue with them..
I also have a Superwinch and that too has been fault free..
Best is Warn.. but you do get what you pay for.
T max spares are available from Bearmach. Originally when my brushes wore out someone on here said spares were impossible to find. Bearmach can source all of the spares for Tmax

They are all cheaper brands, so I expect a new Warn winch is out of you price range. However warn are one of the few brands I would consider buying second hand.
For best performance low voltage DC winches will always struggle to match hydraulic, mechanical or high voltage powered winches, but none of them are as easy or simple to fit and use.
T-max may have changed their design, but one of the notable differences with their winches was they used a slightly larger diameter drum centre and lowered geared, so that the line line speed and pull doesn't alter as much between layers on the drum, which is good for short winches, but down side is they had a shorter rope and had less space for the rope to bunch on sideways pulls. Beyond that though the performance of most on the cheaper low line winches is all fairly similar, ie pretty slow unless under load in which case its very slow (to be fair its still a lot quicker than a manual winch), but should still get the job done. The very cheap winches do seam to be rather variable quality with some working well and others barely lasting a single pull.
I've had good use out of a Superwinch EP9 and its still going strong. Like all winches though it needs regular maintaining (particularly after wading through mud) and its free spool is a lot better after a bit of tweaking. If I do get another electric though it would probably be a goodwinch TDS based on quality of service I've had of David Bowyer, value, reasonable performance and the amount of positive feedback I've heard about them.

The reason for me going down the Goodwinch was
1. Good feedback re: David Bower
2. Seen them on Challange trucks, so they cant be that bad
3. Good price
4. Availabilty of spares unlike some cheaper winches advertised on popular auction sites
5. Worked well while recovering an upturned Corsa rally car that was down a 15ft steep bank, wedge between two trees.

On a semi budget I would go for a come-up, I got my one when Phil Gordon (PG Winches) was still here and its been faultless for the last 3-4 years with only being stripped and cleaned once or twice and it lives outside all the time.
2nd choice is the Goodwinch which is a very similar design although my freespool seized after a year and needed sorting.

Our 12,000lb Goldfish has some grunt Heck knows what it would be like with a bowmotor
For lighter trucks than a rangy, I would say 9,500lb goldfish. Plus its a bit quicker.
Other than that our only other expirience is with TypeR milemarker. Which is as good as it costs
I wondered what that two speed electric thing is like. Tiger or somthing? Looked very quick in reeve speed.

Now this is a can of worms! Define "best"?
Here are questions that need answered first:
for what vehicle?
competition or occasional leisure use or something else?
steel or plasma?
What's your budget?
You can buy a new winch for £250 or less or go nuts and spend £3,000 or even more.
IMHO there is no such thing as 'best' but 'fit for purpose' is probably a better concept.

8274
The off-the-peg winch that's garanteed to eat itself
For best-of-best it's RED winches The quality runs right through it from billet cheeks to proper drum bearings
But they are proper money

I do agree the 8274 is poorly cobbled together, but its easy to fix and better than some of the stuff curently available.
I was shocked when I did my training and stripped my first 8274, I did ask " But why no bearings"? think of how much better it would have been if it was designed to last?
The problem is we all want the best but 90% of us cant afford the fuel bill let alone a quality winch

Given that they are fast approaching £2k off the shelf these days I don't want to "Easily fix" it... I want it to be flippin right in the first place!

IMO the 8274 is a basic good design but it only has one bearing in it in the drive end of the motor, all the rest are plastic bushes, I feel they would be much better if these bushes were swapped for proper roller bearings, but as you say a £2000 winch should be good in the first place!
As I have said many times before we all want a top quality winch but cant afford the price tag, if I had the money it would be hydraulic all the time but I have managed for the last 5 or 6 years with no winch so it would be a waste of money for me.
A note on the chineese stuff, make sure you get a warrenty that incudes parts and labour and if you can pay by credit card then if the vendor dissapears the credit card company will have to refund or sort any warrenty claim.
