As I start to put all the bits I've bought, been loaned, given discounts on (it is an LRW featured vehicle after all) it will become festooned with stickers!

It has been a while but this is what has been done since the last update:

front Challenge Goodwinch with Plasma rope and ally fairlead
old front winch moved to the rear
2 x Numax batteries fitted
rear mounted air filter
front grill
35" Maxxis creepy crawlers on beadlocked wheels
MASTAZ (KD Landrover) off road ECU and remap
centre panel to carry winch and air freespool controls
Gwyn Lewis (OME) full challenge suspension and Sumo steering bars

and the coup de grace

Diet coke bottle powered air freespool system .... yes, you read that right, I am powering my air freespools by using empty Diet Coke bottles as reservoirs ......

Some photos:

Yes, that is a little innovation I've developed. I tried Irn Bru but Coke/Diet Coke seems to work best.

Bet you can't figure what it's for!

Embarassed cheers.

It looks good but these cars are not designed to look good but to perform properly and that is what I like the best - the ongoing development.

No one has asked about the bottles ... I'm developing Bottles Mark 2 already ...

Ummm, am I missing something here? Are your empty diet (shame on you) Coke bottles for operating the air freespools on your winches?

Do I get a prize? Laughing

UNB has been fitted with a pair of Goodwinch TDS winches both of which have that essential Challenge accessory, the Air Freespool. At £95 it is not that expensive and comes with almost eveything you need to fit them, however they have 2 massive failings, you need an onboard air supply often costing £500+ and they are grit magnets.

Dave's instructions are okay although a little out of date but if you can't figure out how to fit one of these then you are not really qualified to own a winch in the first place! My freespools came ready assembled so I didn't have to worry about fitting the O rings but I did have to figure out that teh solenoid valve is uni-directional and getting wrong means you run out of instantly.

So, air supplies. During a long boffin-like conversation with Si at X-Eng he mentioned that he had been in Robot Wars and they used plastic bottles as air reservoirs and that a normal 2 litre Coke bottle can take 220psi before it bursts and you can fit a normal car valve in the cap. I immediately blagged a few schrader valves, emptied a few bottles of Diet Coke and got busy experimenting.

First I measured the rubber valve which is 14mm OD so I drilled a 12mm hole dead centre of the cap and pulled the valve through. I tightened it up, attached by garage compressor and slowly inflated to 90psi and left it to see what happened. And after a week exactly nothing happened so I was ready to use it.

Next problem was how to connect the car valve to the blue pipe. After some serious googling I found a company that sells part for air suspension systems who stock a 6mm OD pipe to schrader valve connector. So I was closer but still frustrated.

Si had mentioned that he had used a tyre chuck (the rubber bit from pump to connector) which he cut in 2 and clamped the blue pipe into the end. I wanted something more secure so eventually I foun a tyre equiment company that sold rubber valve extensions (female to male schrader) who could get them remade into female:female. Result!

Total cost per freespool (I decided to have 1 bottle each) was £15 and all I need to do is carry a few extra bottles back at base camp for each event or use my wee compressor to recharge the bottles.

You only need about 15psi to operate the freespool and you lose a small amount with each use as it vents when you release it. A 500ml bottle give ~35 uses and a 1.25 litre bottle can last almost all day. I've found the 2 litre bottles stretch alarmingly after 2 or 3 recharges but the 1.25l ones are a better shape and last for ages. My compressor can only go to 120psi but I reckon 90-100psi is enough.

WARNING - the valves can push through the cap if the hole is not dead centre or a little too large of gets stretched. One popped out and punched a hole in my roller shutter door so I now store my charged bottles valve downards in a box. I accept no responsibilty for anyone being crazy enough to follow my example

As for being grit magnets, they are easily cleaned and reassembeld but you have to use silicone grease rather than oil ... that is grease NOT sealant (and no I did NOT make that mistake) HOWEVER it is better to avoid getting grit in there in the first place.

This idea was Yogi's, use a 6" length of bicycle tyre inner tube as a freespool condom! Pulled over the body of the freespool and secured with a cable tie leave enough over the top to be crimped and tied with another cable tie. This keep the crud out without impeding the movement of the piston. Simples!

Richard, I wonder if 1L aluminium sports bottles would do the same job. They come in a nice variety of colours. They are mostly anodised on the outside and acid/alkaline proofed on the inside.

I have a spare one here (which I ordered by mistake - it is too big to go into my bike bottle carrier). Mine is going to be the radiator expansion tank for Shortass (the longest running 4x4 project on Difflock, apart from the V12 Landy).

Great idea's,subaru's with air suspension have a very tidy pressure vessel tucked under the right wing(actually has a small compressor attached also)have one here if you want a pic of it,it's not heavy, not sure how safe an alloy bottle may be under that pressure Kitesurf?,i'd stick with plastic (rather flying plastic than alloy) or purpose made job

Rather than the tyre valve & adapter pipe why not hyst use a bolt in fitting the same as used for 300 crankcase breaters. Then you wouldnt have the problem of the valve popping out & wouldnt need the expensive adapter pipe

This is only an example, they can be found much cheaper.

Apologies to Richard for hi-jacking.
Rear brakes, extended brake lines, radiator, harnesses and some cosmetic odds and sods. I just haven't had the motivation since I found that A-framing it is very very naughty. Laughing
