Hi - Driving home in the fog this evening I had a few problems which occurred about 20 mins into the drive. Ok symptoms are;

Battery warning light came on.
Temperature started going up (slowly but was at half way when I noticed & stopped which was pretty much home!)
Heater stopped blowing warm air.
Side repeater indicators were only lighting up dully. I have fitted led lights for the side repeaters so don't know if this makes a difference (old ones were knackered).
Rest of the lights appeared fine but that may have just been my eyes.

So then, any ideas. Its too dark to really look now so will have a poke around tomorrow am and see if there is anything obvious, but if you lot can give me a few ideas of what to look at that would be very helpful.

Its a 200tdi diesel, has a x eng split charge system between the main and a leisure batt.

Ta

Ok just been for a look and it appears that I am missing the fan belt that should connect the fan to the alternator and the engine! Good job I was near home. How easy is the fan belt to replace? Off to find my Hayes book

Put a socket on the tensioner pulley nut useing a long bar you need to force the tension off the pulley. Its pretty straight forward really, look up a pic of the route of the belt if you cant figure it out.

If the new belt squeals to much then look up the penny trick it helped with mine.

Righthoo

Having a go at removing the viscous fan yo get access for belts etc, and am failing so far!!

obviously with the belt snapped there is no resistance when trying to undo the nut, so whats the best way of getting it unscrewed? I've tried gripping the hub with stiltsons(?) but cannot get a good enough grip.

any suggestions?
Ta

A sharp tap using a cold chisel may dislodge it.
Remember it is a left handed thread.

Would an oil filter strap grip it enough whilst you give the spanner a sharp tap with a hammer?

Have tried a chain wrench and a stilston/ oil filter type wrench both to no avail! Cannot get a good enough grip to hold it still.

Currently sat front of the fire warming up before attempt 2

Why are you removing the viscous unit to replace the fan belt?

Can you not just fed the belt around the fan, or does the fan have a solid ring round the blade tips.

Thought it would make life easier!

I've got the other belt off (it stop the fan belt getting on otherwise). Have worked fan belt into rough position and am just trying to adjust alternator to get belt over fully and that is being a pain as well!

Not my day.

No need to remove the fan, just loop it over and away to go, you may have to go underneath to get it over the bottom pulley but there is absolutely no need to remove the fan, trust me, i have done this on the side of a motorway.

well, its amazing what a breath of fresh (cold) air can do for you.

Touch wood, I got the new belt on today, the PAS belt back on and everything done up and put back together in about half an hour (granted it was already half dismantled!!).

The only problem was one of the jubilee clips had vanished, completely gone. I checked my supplies and out of about a dozen I had, most where too small and a couple where too big and would not tighten up enough!!!

Off to B&Q, get home, buy a couple so I have a spare, guess what - find the damn thing straight away.

Think I may have taught the neighbours kids a new word or two!!

Time will tell when I have a drive to work tomorrow, but everything seemed to work ok this afternoon!!

Phew
Thanks for the help and the positive comments about thread handedness Mad
