Aparently one of the sparepart suppliers in South Africa do install 1600cc timing chain shoes on 1700cc enginges, while - according to another local sparepart supplier, this should not be done at all.
So my question : Can 1600cc timing chain shoes be installed on 1700cc Niva engines, and if not - why not ?
Many thanks.

It's not as simple as that. There are about 30 parts that make up the chain tensioner and guide and they all need to be matched.
Stick with the correct parts for your vehicle.
