hi, total newbie to offroading, and for some reason (after being bitten by the sj bug) have caught the frontera bug Shocked Shocked Shocked

im just after a few opinions, on the diesels, any good? its a 2.3 isnt it?
it will be for green lanes, pottering about at work in the forrestry, and driving to p+p sites, possibly towing an sj.

what tyre size can i get on with a bit of lift

are "modification kits" available?

thanks,
and please, dont mention anything about the green ovals

Join the club i have a modded sj that i want to do more to, so took it off road (driveway) and brought a frontera as a work and play toy while im doing the sj, but i love the frontera its very comfey and roomy and its built like a brick sh*t house mine is a 2.0 petrol and has plenty of power and is all round good yer its not as good offroad as my sj but its still good to have fun, mods are limited but thats a good thing so you cant see some thing and think i must have that like them green oval boys. 2" lift 31s or 32s tyres front winch sorted what you cant drive through, drag your self through! been out laning and 5 play and pay days and nothing broken

If its the old 2.3 GM engine as was fitted to the Carlton, then its a good old donky. A mate of mine had the 2.3D Carlton from new, and pulled 720k trouble free miles with it, Running the airports. It was an 1989 he parted with it in 2001, because the body was falling apart. He,s now on his 5th Pug 406 HDI since the Carlton.

yer mines a swb, i think the only diesel worth getting is the 2.8 and the 2.3 is guttless. There isnt a massive amount of mpg diffrence between the 2.0 petrol and 2.8 diesel, why do you want diesel, my petrol was ok on fuel when i got it but then i put a induction kit on it cause the orignal filter was soaked and its even better on fuel

Isuzu 2.8 turbo the one to have mate, 2.3 will go forever but not very fast, run away from the 2.5 vm diesel, same as in the jeeps and gives lots of bother.

Fronty? With the right model theyre pretty good and very underated.

Mines a 2.8TD LWB with the Isuzu 4JB1-TC engine.

It's built like the preverbial brick outhouse, returns around 32-34mpg and according to the book gives out 242Nm @ 3600 rpm.

Far more comf than a L/R (have driven var versions for over 20 years) although I wouldnt want to put one on it's roof and expect to right it and then drive off like I did with a 90 once!

The 2.3 is a heap of S**** engine - suffers from oil pump issues. The 2.8 on the other hand (turbo front intercooler) is a tuned version of the 2.8 mk1 trooper engine and puts out about 115bhp.

Have a look over on muddyfrontera.co.uk if you want to see what frontera's are capable of Wink

Contrary to popular belief the Frontera is a lot easier and cheaper to modify than you would imagine, it doesnt suffer a rusty chassis like the Trooper and most suspension parts are interchangeable.
A good old 2.3 wont set your pants on fire but looked after they will run and run, but they are at least 16 or 17 years old now so most will have a few minor issues.

But just pure bias as I have a 2.8, I have to say this is the longest Ive owned a car, six years this year and barring a snapped timing belt (my fault) it only bent push rods, the starter and alternator I have had to replace again these breaking was my fault off road, the car has never given any other issues.

I did have 20L Sport for a couple of years before the 2.8 and quite liked it but on road it felt like it needed another gear and off road the low box wasnt quite low enough Laughing but it was a great fun car.
