Brake upgrade for the Unimog 404!
1)Find a Leyland Daf 45 Roadrunner 45 7.5 tonner Pic One.
2)Make sure it has all the Brakes and tanks – Pic 2
3)Remove the lot, tanks,Pedal valve – Pic 3 – Its quite easy, the air pipes are push fit, you just pull back the collars and most of the pipes come out, get everything and as many uncut pipes as possible, you must get the widget that unloads the compressor, bolted next to the master cylinder. Anything with a black nylon pipe – get it!! The pedal valve is a fiddle but do able once the front panel in front of the cab is removed.
4) 3 hours later you should have this – pic 4
5)Fit the pedal block into your Mog pedal box – ****
6) Master cylinder and tanks onto your Mog – Pic 6
7) Fit a compressor onto your engine – Pic 7 – I used the one from the Roadrunner (with mods) which has a power steering pump on the back – so power steering too if you can find a box?
And you end up with Dual air, dual hydraulic brakes which just shove fluid down your existing pipes and actually work. Somehow the pedal valve is proportional so its not like a switch – the harder you press, the quicker you stop! Press hard and all the wheels stop going round – even on tarmac!

Obviously there are a few more bits and pieces to do, brackets etc, but I have been running this system 3 years now and its still working.
The reason for this write up is that I have just stripped another Roadrunner for spares and took pictures this time!

Thats a great setup you have there Turnip, thanks for the write up. I think I may have to keep an eye out for a cheap roadrunner to rob the bits from.
Do you use the air for park brake too or are you still using the existing mog lever?
Call me sad, but I do like the sound of air brakes being applied on a truck - Ill get my anorack Rolling Eyes

i'm quite curious, is there an air to hydraulic converter then?

mike air hand brakes are not as straight forward as they first seam. the setup is different, on a car or mog you have a manual cable/rod activated brake so that in the event of brake failure (pipe burst/severed etc) you can apply the manual handbrake to slow/stop the vehicle.

on a hgv or psv vehicle utilising full air brakes (with the nice sounding woosh) the handbrake is held ON by heavy springs and the air pulls/pushes the shoes off, so that in the event of air failure the handbrake self applys to stop the vehicle.

we also have a thing called a broms brake that cuts the supply of air when the pressure drops below a certain level.

ie you split and air line and pressure starts to drop, broms cuts in, cutting air to handbrake, handbrake comes on, also low pressure alarm will come on, you then assit stopping the vehicle with main brake on the air left in tanks.

on another note, hgv's and psv's have a blow off/dryer valve, when the tank reaches pressure it let's off like a dump valve (always makes people jump Smile )

nice write up turnip Smile may well be usable on other makes as well Smile

Mike, I have retained the manual Mog handbrake because I fancy having something to desparately heave when all else fails!! I dont know what your Mog standard handbrake is like but mine doesnt lock the wheels on tarmac? Because I do a lot of winching I have done a mod so that I can by pass the foot pedal and open a valve that leaves air on the diaphragms and locks all wheels. The down side of my system is that there is absolutely no physical connection between the pedal and the brakes....so in my OTT way I have the following - Tank one = service brake acting on 2 hydraulic circuits, Ditto tank 2. Tank 3 is separate through hand valve on one mastercylinder diaphragm and two hydraulic circuits, Tank 4 is blown by a separate 12 volt electric pump and acts through service 1! Sounds complicated but ever so easy to rig up using Roadrunner parts.
Jon is right about the spring handbrake (see pic) This is spring on and air off on the Roadrunner via cables and would be easy to rig on the Mog. And Jon - yes the Clayton master cylinder you can see in the pics has the pedal and plunger replaced by two diaphragms fed from the pedal unit so just uses air to move the fluid instead of foot - I just connected the two master cylinder pipes into the mog pipes - separate for front and rear. So you would need an awful lot of bad luck before you lost all brakes?
