A mate has a W reg 270CDI 4x4, recently it went into limp home mode and he could only use 2nd, N or Reverse.
On the dash it was showing say 1st gear selected when it was in 2nd. i.e showing the wrong gear selection, compared with what was selected.

Now, it shows no gears selected on the dash, but can still select 2nd, N and R.

No MIL lights shown that i know of.

Any ideas?

Being a Sprinter repair shop/specialist I can't be of much help without the use of a scanner.
The only real way is to interrogate the the unit with a factory system. I have a lap top based system used by the factory to check the product prior to dealer release.
Sorry I can't help more
Dennis

Guys
I hate to pour cold water on the OBD scanner idea!--the info you will get is the generic type all to do with the engine management system.

When it comes to manufacturer specific stuff like the ABS/SRS/Trans/Securuty/ etc the info will be either non existent or scant to state the least. Mercedes/LR and many others including Volvo are pigs for restricting repair info unless you have the factory scanner, in your case a StarTech system.
I am rooting for you to be successful in finding the fault info--really the best of luck but you might be peeing into the wind!
Dennis

The ODBII scanner, wasnt used AFAIK, it was taken to a indie dealer.
It turned out to be the module under the gear selector. All swapped out for a new one....Cost over £700

Yes they probably used/had a StarScan, a $30,000 piece of lap top loaded kit from Merb.
I have used it (demo) and found it to very quick, helpful and it interrogated areas of the vehicle I would not normally have done on a defect scan in seconds. It even gives you a pictorial of where to find the component you are testing if defective.
An infrared key system fault I tackled recently was traced in minutes on a C class; it would have taken me hours to run it down without this equipment!

Good for customer presentation and job selling.

A bit of an overkill for my level of Mercedes business and my Merb factory production line DAD scanner loaded on a laptop does everything I need to service Sprinters. Spendy repair!
Cheers Dennis
