A few of the "big boys" are selling them on their sites......
They look like they'd do damage to either truck or tree....

I have a set of them, Used mainly when the car i am recovering is totaled. I tend to stick em round the wish bone etc so i dont run the risk of buggering the strap.
By the way how much would you be selling them for (if at selling at all) as i know a couple of guys after some

Bertie i have 'always' used the chain from the rear tow hook to a tree with a tree strop around it,
or to a vehicle thats providing me with an anchorage when i am winching something in to me.
Always carried and used a chain since its how my father taught me.
When needed for extra length had on a bridle to chain and strop or used a long strap or rope, but i feel happier with the chain ring and hook.
The chain shortener makes the job quick nd simple and safe.
so chain on to the rear of my vehicle and run to the strop or fixing point on whats holding me,
then run my vehicle forward untill the chain is tight and chocks under the front wheels if front of and behind the tyres,
and ready then to run the winch cable out from the front, secured to the vehicle to be winched in towards me.
Usefull for runnig second secure points to do double line pulls or at angles, you can quickly set the length and angle and fix a swing away block etc to the chain or the block you are running off it.
I dont often use it for towing out but it is usefull in it doesnt get damaged when hiting the ground like webbing or rope.
last/only one i have bought was 30 pound, East Coast Farmers Supplies, before that they were aquired from haulage yards and farms, they were always used by drivers for HGV tow outs or towing out trailers.

Cheers for that George,
I use a Quick strap, its kinder to the tree and has a higher rating (12t) than a chain....
I can see they'd be handy for wrecked cars.....
If ye can still get them for £30 i'll take a few, these things aint cheap...

to me thats a tree strop,
wether its quick snap or not, always use them and point out that lifting strops are different,
i have loads that probably originate from Machine Mart or where ever my tree chopping friend gets them.
I will have a look when i am home in Forfar,
thats 2000 price or so, i imagined now 55 + vat. i have a trade ticket tho so can see what they say on a few, i could do with 2 now that i think of it.
its a 30 tonne breaking that i bought.
let me know your price on a 2 metre, i am in Hungary just now.
george
PS my youngest is now doing rope access full time with a Perth firm you might know, did his Test at Ratho.
Aberdeen Airport, Glasgow confrence centre etc are his norths and souths just now.
he's enjoying it but not going for his RGIT just now.

You might be able to get em cheaper than me...

no, 30 tonne was what i got, not what i needeed.
it was just agricultural.
did mean you could hand it safely to a jcb or lorry tho if needs must.
Bertie they will probably never get used anymore,
(becoming a clean handed person and stopping messing about with heaps)
but handy to carry in the camper and i have a toyota now.
i keep the recovery chain in a tattie sack with some oil on it.
found so much mildewed stuff, ropes, straps, strops and ratchet straps when the 110 went and i sorted out my sheds.
amazing how stuff gets put back away when wet and not seen again for a while.
Best to just use one set regularly really i suppose.
so, 1 set in each motor and look after it is my new policy.
catch you soon.
george

chain also useful for hand pulling/winching with a hi lift jack as it doesn't stretch an inch, unlike webbing, which will have some stretch, and can be adjusted/reset easliy
have only used it to pull out a dented rear door so far though!

yeah, we aquired a set of chains from a timber haulage company, it takes 2 people to lift it. dont know what rating it is, but i swear by it for pulling the tractor and muckspreader out of the bogs, thats about 24 ton and then the 13tonner pulling it.
have also got a wire rope, about 500ft of it, again, no idea on strength but not so keen on using it. wire makes a hell of a mess if it goes wrong
