Hi all,
As some may have seen in my earlier post.... I snapped all my mounts off
I'm just wondering... what have others done to replace mounts?
I had land rover transmission mounts on my old SJ, but they were literally rock hard...
I have 1 "HD Mount" that came from Rhino Ray... which is basically front spring eye poly bush with a bolt through it and some big washers.
Is this actually a proper mount or did my mate (who bought 3 and then gave me this one) get scammed when he bought it?
I've temporarily copied it and made 3 of them so it's mounted up and seems quite sturdy... Just wondering if it's actually supposed to be like that... As the original mounts do not have a bolt that goes all the way through
Cheers in advance all

The origional mounts required the rubber to resist tension as well as compression loads, with a through bolt design however the rubber is only in compression so it can't rip apart or come unstuck from the metal. The advantage of the origional mounts was simlicity/ease of assembly (particuarly for mass production) and it only needs 1 piece of rubber for each mount rather than 3 (1 between the brakets and the other 2 top and bottom of the brakets).

Hmmm I've only got the rubber inbetween the tcase mount arm and the chassis mount point
tis like this:
Although if people are using these and they're ok, I'm happy
At least they are a bit more pliable that LR mounts

IMO best to use 3 bushes like this as it will reduce vibes and allow for a bit more movement.

Twiss, I wouldn't use that sort mount with just one bush like that. Although it should provide vibration absobtion in compression, it is effectively just bolted steel to steel in tension and won't absorb much of the vibrations as a result.
I made some like that using the old shackle bushes from my springs and used 1 whole bush between the brakets like that and cut another in 2 and placed a half top and bottom of the braket (like the ones pictured just above). This meanth that there was the same amount of rubber and therefore stiffness+damping in both directions as well as being able to use a shorter bolt, they don't stick down so far and I only needed to use up 2 old bushes per mount. Thats the theory for the moment though as the SJ is still being rebuilt so I've yet to find out just how effective they will be.

RR V8 engine mounts and a grinder, works for me.
The mounts are cheap as.
On the originals you'll notice that one is slightly different than the rest, so you can make an exact copy.
Just my 2p.

Hi Twiss,
just a quick observation, if you don't care about vibration why change to more bushes? I cant immediately think of a reason they can't be bolted up solid. it'll all work you'll just feel every tooth in the t-box going round!

if its not rubber mounted all the forces that they are under will soon rip a big hole in the side of the casing

i dont like the idea of running massive tbox rubbers unless the box mounts are part of a protective cradle.

As I've shown in the pic I doodled, I think I will use more spring eye bushes, and cut the wider outside bits off, and put them on the outside...
Hopefully that will dampen the vibrations a bit! Just needed a quick fix so I could drive it to work really...
I'll knock some decent solutions up at the weekend

OUCH
that's a savage pic!
I will take that into consideration!!! I haven't hit the t-case hard enough on anything to break the standard mounts before... but will be extra careful!!!
Will be getting a t-box guard soon then
Does rockwatt make em?

I made my own polybush bolt through mounts up and I'm well chuffed with them, the standard ones are cack. Plenty of these left too. I made a rockbucket as well for the same reason.

The solid rubber (no bolt) mounts are there for a reason.
If you directly mount the t-box to the chassis with a big bolt then something else will have to give further down the line...........
Hopefully the bolt but, as the t-box is aluminium, I doubt it.

I am using crappy "2nd hand" dirty rust bolts instead of new high tensile ones

I had heard enough about busted T boxes on SJs, that a combined brace and skid plate for the T box was the first modification my SJ recived. They weren't all just broken off where the brackets bolted on, some had just had the bottom cracked off.

i belive mr rockwatt makes the combined brace and skid plates.
i v taken my transferbox of now and my bushes wernt even flush with the mounts. it was pointing up towards the bulk head. think that coudl be the power mayb. think im luckey i didnt break anything.
with the brace and skid plate do you need to put some bushes in as well? if so what would ppl reccomend.

You will still need some bushes between the T box and the chassis though a skid plate like the one in the link below doesn't require any additional bushes and is fixed to both the t box mounting brackets
http://forum.difflock.com/viewtopic.php?t=1604
There are stronger designs, providing stronger bracing, though it does provide a reasonable increase in strength without a lot of extra weight.

That's the template I used to make mine, very easy to make and fit, I also doubled both the long and short mounts and made braces on both mounts as well, I extended it a bit to protect my transmission disc brake too. And looking at the underside of it now, I'm so glad I did it.
