I want to get this right! Was in Lough Fea last weekend and clever placing of the punches on the punch hunt almost certainly means i better change the oils as i had no wading plugs fitted.

Its a 1996 300 tdi Defender 90.

A local garage just assured me i can put in EP 80W/90 into the diffs and gearbox, but i am nearly sure i have read that the gearbox benefits from a special oil, (Was it ATF). Am i going mad or is that correct, and is the required oil generally available or do i have to go to a Landrover Dealers?

That could be just the job, as i neglected to mention that my gearbox seems to be getting a little 'notchy'.

Dont ever put EP80/90 into the R380 gearbox it must be ATF or MTF !!

EP80/90 is only used in transfer box and diffs

Hope this helps

Chris

You know i had a feeling that there was a special fluid for the gearbox, but i didnt trust my own instincts, asked a Landrover expert, and ended up putting EP 90 in the gerabox.

I knew it was wrong straight away as it was difficult to get some of the gears, so after a short test run i drained it out and put in the correct ATF Fluid.

Chris, are you able to educate me on this R380 business as i have heard so much about it.
When did they start to use thr R380?
What was used previous?
Are there any obvious advantages/weakenesses of the R380?

The LT77 was used before the R380 and you have to be careful what you put in either of them. There is a good article in the Difflock mag about the grearbox and how to go about things.

Let me correct Winnet's syntax:

The LT77 was fitted in earlier Defenders and was superseded by the R380 and you have to be careful what you put in both of them.

Difflock's Evo 1 is the stuff - made my gearbox feel like new. It is beloved by the German Morgan racing Clubs wo use LR engines and gearboxes.
