Which older pickup?

Im getting rid of my unreliable turd of a range rover and going to buy an older pickup but don't know much about them

Im looking at older hilux's and l200's what should I be looking out for do

any of them have any sort of difflock?
how do they perform off road?
what sort of weight can they take?
anything else I should consider? tata?

I dont mind if its battered as it will be getting used but they seem a little over priced

Most of the 'heavy weight' 4x4 will carry a tonne for company tax reasons. The medium ones carry whatever the manufacturer decides.

Offroad they are long but perform the same as anything else really.

The nissans have known issues with the engines.

The fords have known issues with the fuel pumps.

Hilux & L200 hold their money stupidly well. I don't know much about the isuzu? There was also the vauxhall brava. Proton & Skoda also did 2wd ones.

The first place to go is usually the bed and the chassis under the bed if its a working one. If its a 4x4 the drivers seat and sill is usually pretty worn due to getting in and out of a high vehicle.

forget the nissan's and fords, there ok work horses but ***** offroad, and as for shitsubishi's there dear on parts and give a crap mpg return so find a hilux you'll be a much happier person if you buy one.

Both the Hilux and the L200 come with the option of a factory fitted rear locker (not LSD).
Older (pre '96) Hilux's with the live/beam front axle also had the option of a front locker as well.

The pre '96 Hilux drives like a dog on the road - worse than a zook even. Very bouncy and 'jolty'. Noisy. No power up hills (didn't come with a turbo in those models).
Later (ifs) models with the turbo are much better and (due to IFS) more comfortable).

L200 is more comfortable on the road with better manners. Plenty of power and a smoother ride.

Off road?
Beam axle Hilux with lockers any day of the week. Even better if you get one with a good turbo conversion (be careful, it's a difficult conversion and if not done properly will end in tears before bed time as nanny says).

Between the IFS L200 and IFS Hilux...............?
Not much in it.
So far the Hilux has had less problems and seems to perform slightly better off road but the difference is so small that it is down to drivers and not vehicles.
L200's over here have been known to have cylinder head/over heating problems (not on a regular basis but more common than on the Hilux), problems with the front crank (? - bottom one anyway) pulley as it can come slightly loose and eat the bearing and destroy the shaft. Pneumatic front locking hubs seem to have a tendency of failing/blocking but again, this is only in comparison to the Hilux and if they do fail they close automatically.
