gas bottle carrying

just been behind a 90 that had a 15kg gas bottle fixed to roof ladder at back.

is this legal?

only asking as thinking of doing same if it is.

it needs to be secure,you need to have a stick on warning triangle to say you are caring gas plus you need to cheack with your insurance that they will cover you

Was it really a 15 kg one (full size)on the outside,
was this fixed low down?
A 15 kg bottle full weighs around 30kg.
You can now get light weight bottles.

If your traveling & need to carry a 'spare' gas bottle externally on the vehicle because of limited space then why not,
other than more weight high up if thats where it is carried.
& its going to cause problems on some ferries in this country
& abroad, i have had my gas tanks inspected inside my 110 because i was displaying 'gas carried sticker'.
the motorhomes were just getting waived on.

One problem other than needing to always lock it on when you are not going to be with the vehicle,
is someone turning the valve open if you have a regulator fitted ,
because they think its funny.
(unlikely but caravanners often leave regulators fitted)
Even worse if they decide to light it.

If its only going up there permenantly to look like an expedition motor, might as well be carrying an empty one.

Just another thief magnet if left permanantly on a vehicle tho,
& even 6 or 10 kg bottles are not the best thing to have on a roof rack in the event of a roll. IMHO

its only for when we all go camping.
space is very tight with 8 of us in the 110 and trailer isnt biggest in world.

Its legal, but what kind of trailer is it, and does it have mounting space for a second gas bottle (many caravans and trailer tents etc do)?

Dont know what type of trailer you have, but could not fix it to the A frame or straight bar by way of a secure mounting, then a lock

rule is a max of 2 x 10lt bottles carried inside vehicles,
how big a bang will that make do you think combined with 200 lts plus of LPG?

Saw a German VW combi van with a couple of hippi types in it with a 30kg gas bottle with a splitter/regulator feeding their fridge and cooker.

No warnings on that vehicle.

I only carry a 10kg bottle for the main cooker and one of those small camping gaz stoves to boil a kettle in a laybay if I feel like a having a coffee when on the road.

You don't need warning labels on a motorhome or caravan carrying gas bottles. In the case of a motorhome, the gas bottle comparment is ventilated (downwards, propane/butane is heavier than air) so the explosion risk if there's a leak is minimal. There's regs about it being not too near the exhaust too, I think. Also they're in their own cupboard. In the case of coachbuilts and some van conversions, this is externally accessible only to make the sealing better.

its an old trailer tent.
never thought of welding holder to front of trailer will do that when i refurb it.
