I was looking for cheap fully synthetic oil for the diffs, gearbox, tranmsmission, when I came across this:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem...TRK:MEWAX:IT#shId
It costs the same as semi-synthetic. I think the viscosity is right, but it doesn't have the GL5 thing in the name (whatever that is).
Any opinions?

It does say further down the page that it can be used where GL4 and GL5 is specified. As for the vicosity, not sure what vehicle it is for but Land Rover specify EP80w90 for Diffs and Transfer case, so it should be okay.
I'm no expert but I believe GL4 is required for older boxes/transfer cases/Diffs that contain soft metal bearings and bushes. The GL5 spec is for newer boxes that contain tougher bearings and is potentially damaging to older soft bearings; GL5 spec has acidic compounds in it that increase its performance but can attack the softer bearings in older boxes. I think that using a fully synthetic oil avoids this problem, which is why the supplier states it is safe to use for both GL4 and GL5 requirements. If you've got any doubts, try getting hold of the supplier.
Alternatively, as posted above, I can highly recommend the Difflock oils. Not the cheapest but it does support the forum and that's priceless

The GL4/5 spec does not relate to the bearings.
GL5 oils contain additives intended for extreme pressure applications such as hypoid geared differentials (this is the same as the EP in EP spec oils), and depending on the particular GL5 oil, sulphur may be one of the additives used.
Sulphur is known to attack the brass & bronze (commonly called yellow metals) used for bushes & syncho rings - so GL5 oils which contain sulphur should not be used in this application.
Yellow metal safe GL5 oils do exist and can be safely used.

Thanks Andy, but unfortunately the price difference is a factor of three, and I need 6.5 litres of it, so I can't justify it. This Smith & Allen oil is just damn cheap for fully synthetic.
