Well chaps - I have finally realised my dream of getting some crawler gears for my Mog. I have stripped them down and cleaned them up.
I have been puzzling in my mind about how you could just bolt something onto the bottom of the box and magically end up with extra gears - without first removing something from the existing drive train?
After a lot of head scratching and reading it seems that the crawlers only work when the F- N - R lever is in neutral and the main box is in 1 or 2 - or possibly all the lows 1 - 4 if you have done the range change mod?
If this is the case there are no reverses in crawler and what stops you putting crawler in with F-N-R in F or R? and totally wrecking the box? Apart from common sense! There does not appear to be a lock out - which is strange considering the lengths they went to in order to prevent reverse being engaged in High and making the box sequential from 2 - 3
Or am I missing something? Any other tips on fitting / using?

It is some what of a mystery if you go to http://classicunimogs.com/install_crawler_gears.html
it gives you basic fitting instuctions
when you have fitted them you will find that if you go to select forward on forward/reverse lever it will push crawlers out of gear
you can select reverse with crawers engaged the 2 reverse gears will be the standard reverse ratio
I have fitted air shift to engage the crawlers which works well I have also done the 8 speed mod to shift plate I had 2 issues doing the 8 speed mod one was when i was doing mod to top plate to take off Q shift plate ect I had the plate clamped in vice by the long forward/reverse selector which got bent forward by about 3mm which was enough to cause a issue by locking two gears at once easy enough to fix and add extra brace to,
The second issue was being able to select high range with crawlers engaged which is not a good idea so I have added a external linkage to disengage crawlers if you engage high range I can email you photos of out external linkage if you like but i'm not bright enough to post them on forum
I have yet to get engine back in and cab back on should be tonight that it happens and with a bit of luck should be mobile by mid next week
I'll let you know how the crawlers go with the 8 speed mod should give 12 gears forward and 4 reverse

Too bad you can't post the pictures here lemansred. I think we are a lot who would like to see it! Maybe you have a link to somewhere, where you have posted them?

lemonsred if you want to post them up you can email them to me and i will post them up for you
i had the crawler gears in the minimog but never used them because it was way to slow anyhow and if i needed them to crawl over rocks then the 67"wheel base was a hinderence (very unstable on big rocks)

Got them all cleaned up and ready to go. Just making new gaskets. I have to decide whether to do them now or wait and do the range change conversion at the same time?
I have another way of range change and keep PTO but I just have to get it clear in my mind!
I have a small hydraulic crane to fit in the rear now, but I am having to take the extreme body flex into account with the mountings!

Alright, sounds like a plan.
Re. chassis flex, I have often thought about stopping it, just weld up the U profiles to become a box section instead. Because with the amount of flex in the suspension and the fact that it has two lockers it isn't really necessary and it makes mounting everything a PITA!
But I will probably never get around doing it as I havent got any further modding planned for my Mog at the moment. No funds, no fun.

So what are you getting? Im guessing 4 forward crawlers, 4 forward and 4 reverse low box and 4 high forward only in high box? Did you keep a PTO?

Yes pretty much as you say 4 crawler 4 low range 4 high range 4 reverse low range
you can use reverse with crawlers engaged when you pull forward/reveres leaver back you can go backwards
reverse low range 1, 2, 3, 4,
when you put forward/reverse leaver in neutral you can go forwards
crawler gears 1, 2, 3, 4,
No I don't have a PTO the only issue I can see using PTO with 8 speed conversion would be where to put you high/low leaver as you use the place where the PTO leaver goes for your high/low leaver If it was me I'd still put forward/reverse leaver in PTO location and machined a place in the top cover to relocate the PTO leaver
