Hi all, Quick stupid question.

Can I get away without my front prop shaft for a couple of days? 30 mph max, light town driving. Keep the rev low, accelerate slowly etc, etc

I took it off when replacing the clutch slave cylinder to aid access and found out it only had 2 bolts holding it at the front diff end, Plus the nylocs are knackered, they came off without a spanner, bloody close one, could have been a disaster. I have ordered new nuts/bolts but cant bare to be without a car until they arrive.

Cheers

Can't see why not Confused Series LR used to eat diffs with V8 in and abuse. Would have thought disco would last a long time if you drove it normally Very Happy It's not viscous 4x4 or anything like that is it?

yes, in difflock, if you have to, but not recommended as could cause transmission problems and /or tyre wear on corners especially around town.

It shouldn't be too hard to get eight nuts and bolts, obviously depends where you live of course.

I have driven from North Yorkshire to Billing without a front propshaft in a 110 a few years ago (bought prop shaft at show)
all motorway miles and gingerly driven.

Personally I would walk for a few days,

gearbox -V- 8 nuts and bolts

I drove home from cornwall with only one prop. Replaced the uj when I got home and had no problems.

It will be fine so long as you take it easy on acceleration.
Handling will be a bit different though.

driving in difflock with no front prop will not cause any problems at all as the diff cannot wind up without load front and back providing it is not a viscous coupling.
if you have to physically select diff lock by pushing the transfer lever to the left then it is manual and will be absolutely fine.
i drove around for 3 months without a front prop without any problems and didn't have to stick to 30mph either.
just drive it as normal, of course if you go off road you'll probably find it difficulty but that goes without saying.
a bloke in our club has not had a front prop on for almost a year and he drives like your typical 18year old saxo pilot and his disco's fine.

Cheers all,

Confirmed what I thought. I have already popped around the block to test the clutch operation and it drove fine.

Thanks again

Handling is sometimes a bit different, as the front suspension tends to "lift up" as there is no axle torque twisting (well, that's how i describe it, not sure of the proper term for it)
but you'll find the vehicle a bit quicker, it's amazing how much power an extra axle can sap from the engine.

Cheers wizard but already got them ordered.

It really does feel a bit quicker but I put it down to me being worried about going to fast. I'm surprised it really is noticable.

It will be fine - series trucks and early 110 had 2wd as an option anyway.

I guy I know has converted his 109 to permanant 2wd (not sure why) and it runs fine.
