Hello all, first post so go easy............
I have two pairs of 404 axles and have just purchased the pinion conversion kit from TCF engineering. Plan is to carfeully blast the main body of the axle down, strip the hubs and UJS, new seals and anything else that needs replacing.
I also have a mint 404 chassis that I plan on cutting down by 14" to take it down to 100" then transplant a 6.5l GMC TD with auto box into the chassis. 4 link suspension (coilovers if I can afford them).
Do I stick with drums or but the disc conversion (I see the discs as an investment)?
Do I go for 4 wheel steer using the two front axles I have? and what would be involved diff wise? The plan was to have hydraulic ram steering through an orbital valve. I would need a hydraulic pump for the winch anyway.
welcome to the group
it sounds like a good plan
as regards the brakes the drums work if adjusted correctly but the discs are a far better idea as regards matenece and reliability
4ws once you have done it you wont look back even though its quite a complex to get the ram to work (self centralise) __________________________________ WHAT YOUR ASKED WHEN YOU OWN A MOG

The mog I picked up was a Nato one. Amazed at the condition, it is perfect for a 1959. It is a real shame to have to get rid of the torque tubes. I am looking forward to an auto box. Does anyone know where I can get a PDF manual for the 404 or more specifically the axles. There is one on eBay but I dont want to spend £95!!
I don't think they got it normalbloke and I feel I should tell before someone wastes to much dollars even though I don't really like mog muder's.
Basically 404 axels are the weakest of all mogs and can't handle either the HP or high speeds of a V8 not even axels from a u1300 handles it without a trip to the Hellgeth brothers

I was not referring to axle strength.I have no opinion of the 404 axles apart from binning the drums.I was referring to the cost of the parts required to rebuild the UJs.
I know there has been talk of near on £1k to do both sides in parts. That was for the larger SBU mogs,so fingers crossed for you that the 404 is not as steep.

I think in America you have a much wider choice of axles, transfer boxes, gearboxes and engines. Shipping them to the UK is not really a financial option for me. I also think in America your terrain is either rocks/desert or mud on a massive scale.
We run in woodlands / quarries
The 404's are like you say basically the smallest of mog axles and are not suited to the speeds required for 'mudding' (60mph plus).
In the UK the standard rover v8 3.5 is considered 'powerfull' (150bhp i think?). In US a 400bhp small block seems to be the starting point.
Lets not forget the standard 404 with its narrow tyres and <90hp 2.2l petrol is a very capable vehicle!
I have a Landcruiser HJ60 4.0 D sat here (on ebay actually). I would love to keep the axles engine and box but need the money and space to get on with the mog buggy project!

some people here dont seem to grasp the concept you are trying to achieve, the gmc 6.5 td is not a powerfull, as in high horsepower output, but what it does have is a high torque output at very low rpm, using the right th400 box and a np205/208 is the power train found in the first mod of the humvee's. this coupled to the portal axles and reduction gearing at the hubs will provide a very capable setup, its never going to be the fastest kid on the block, but with the right tyre selection, it'll crawl just about anywhere, just remember its not the constant applied torqe that breaks things, but the sudden jolts and bangs this is why you see so many breaks among the big petrol engined american rockcrawlers, steel shafts dont like sudden on/off applications of power, a good search on the web will locate most of your gmc bits, withams are currently holding a good selection of rolling chassis with the said combination good luck with your project whitchever way you go, any non l/r is always a good start __________________________________ when in doudt, gie it a clout, bigger the doubt, bigger the clout
LOL anything non LR............................You have seen the same GMC taverns as me then!!!! I bid on the online auction and was the under bidder at £675. Aparently a tad over £750 will buy one in the tender. I figured there will be a set of 4x4 axles (dana in theory) plenty of weight in the chassis should return me a bit of scrap, sell the axles. Auto gmc 6.5 for £500 ish. Red diesel is a big saving. Like you say 6.5gmc enough torque to pull a house down and a nice auto box is a must for me.
sammyb can you tell me how you came to that conclusion
funny theres quite a few mog buggys running big hp v8 engine with well oversized tyre and the major prob is with airborne antics and comming down with the wheels spinning or hard on a portal box on a roll
as you say it might be the weekest in a mog line up but its still 3 times stronger than most built up dana 60's the weekest link in the 404 is the gearbox which runs on bushies rather than bearings and they realy dont like hp high reving engines __________________________________ WHAT YOUR ASKED WHEN YOU OWN A MOG
