don't know much on freelanders, but there's plenty on here that do and also us em off road to some degree. so if anything's going to shake the bugs out of them and brings up knock-on faults, that will.
welcome to the forum!!

The Freelander doesn't have a transfer box. It does have a viscous coupling which drives the rear wheels, and an intermediate reduction drive (IRD) which transmits power from the gearbox to the viscous coupling unit (VCU).
What tends to happen, is that the VCU siezes up, this can break the support bearings, and then the IRD. Given time, I believe that the gearbox can be damaged too.
By the time you replace all that lot, it may cost more than the car is worth.

Hi, welcome and I'm sorry you've had problems with your Freelander.
As others have said, I to suspect that the VCU has failed, then taking out the rest of the drive train. Unfortunately it is not uncommon, but most people catch it soon enough not to ruin the IRD.
Probably the only cure for you is to replace the whole lot, and potentially that is not cheap. I don't know where you are but Bell Eng have received good reports from others, so it might be worth getting in touch with them. Link in Oceantrader's post.
