My first post on this forum so be gentle with me looool
There have been a few threads on Td5 turbo options in the past... and one thing that gets brought up quite often is the use of VNT (variable nozzle turbos) and the benefits they should bring. The down side is the need for a custom exhaust manifold, modified exhaust down pipe, modified oil pipes - and which turbo to use - making sure it's matched to the requirements and characteristics of the Td5 engine.
Until now that is....
Here are a couple of pictures of the first prototype -baring in mind that from the outset, this turbo has been designed and cast especially for the Td5
So it will bolt straight onto the standard exhaust manifold, it uses a standard exhaust downpipe and also the standard air intake pipe work - literally a bolt on conversion.
But more importantly... it is designed exclusively for the requirements and flow rates of the Td5 engine. It is not one off another vehicle modified to suit a Td5 - which may be far from ideal.
More details will follow (as still early days), but initial indications are looking promising. Even on a standard map (on an otherwise standard Defender), the turbo makes quite a difference. It makes more boost from much lower RPM, and the speed at which it makes boost when on the go is nothing but amazing!!!
However....
When remapped to make use of the increased boost pressures at lower RPM.... that's when the fun begins!
Although still early days, and we have 'A LOT' more testing to do before the turbo and various 'map' options will be ready for sale.... all I can say is that it will be worth the wait!!!
In the mean time the company who are making the turbo, ian from IRB and myself at bell auto services have quite a bit more work to do!!!
More info soon
Regards Pete

Just got of the dyno again after making some changes to my EU2 early defender mapping .
Results are +58.1BHP & +109.9Ft-lb at the flywheel.
Althow my car did not make no where near the LR standard because of some issues i have with the engine at the moment and this dyno does if anything reads less than actual (which is always a bonus),
it still made this super gain over its standard output.
I still have got some final tuning to do to smooth out the BHP curve which insidently you dont actualy feel on the road it just seems to shows on the graph
This was running BAD supermarket fuel just to see what difference i could make on the cheaper stuff
More to follow
Regards Pete

this on a 2.8 td5 with a healthily sized intercooler and side exit exhaust with a remap would be silly fun

My TD5 makes 327BHP and 192 torque respectively with Allisport intercooler, griffin exhaust and a Redline Mike Remap - how more would I be likely to get before exploding something?

is that a misprint?
i thought the td5 couldnt take much more than 200-250?
and arent the boxes set to blow at 200 ft/lb?

Come on Biggest Dickes, tell us more about this TD5 , mighty impressive figures there, do you run it on magic mushrooms or do you keep them all for personal consumption

I thinks there has been a typo there???????
I'm sure diesels tend to have more torque than bhp,and 327bhp seems an awful high gain from those mods.
Maybe you have the figures the wrong way round?

at 5080rpm (i think) torque n bhp are equal... below 5080rpm torque increases as bhp decreases and above 5080rpm bhp increases as torque decreases and the td5 doesnt rev much harder than 5 grand so im guessin its a typo

Yes, just a typo.
327lbft torque
192 BHP
Still bloody in anyone's eyes.

Is there any plans for these VN Turbo's to be made that are none model specific, i.e, if you can make a manifold you can use it on anything like the Garret GT series etc? A nice bit of kit anyway, makes me a bit jealous of you landy owners
That's an impressive torque figure Richard!!!
Has the torque curve moved to cover more of the rev range or is it similar to standard curve only more amplified? That question is for both Richard and Bell Auto Services
Since my own Turbo was modified it produces boost much lower down the rev range (on boost before 1500 rpm) and holds it right up to the red line (now red lines at 4500 rpm, standard is 4250 rpm) where as before it wouldn't be on boost until at least 2000 rpm and it had run out of puff by 3500 rpm
Cheers, John
P.S, just put my glasses on and had a look at the dyno graph, my question is answered, good gains everywhere nice work!!
