Thanks. I'm aware of the rover caliper option, I even reconsidered it when I saw some on ebay this evening - but I'm building a road legal project truck and plan on an entirely brand new brake system. Brand new disks, calipers, pads, braided brake hoses, brake lines, master cylinder etc.
I don't want crusty, unreliable old Rover parts on my truck. Those Rover calipers are probably fine, but my nephew is going to be in this truck one day, and I'm not interested in "probably". I'm interested in "damned well bulletproof and proven". I've spoken to people who've had problems with the Rover calipers sticking. So they're not an option because to my mind, they're not well engineered enough.
I'd much rather have line-locks and a decent transmission brake (even if that's the standard Suzuki drum brake) any day of the week.
If the vehicle was still going to be just an offroad-only toy that never sees more than 15mph, and never has anyone but me in it, I'd not be so picky. But family is going in this truck, and on the road, too. So it's getting a 6-point cage, brand new brakes all round, new steering box/linkage/dampers, brand new 31" road tyres (BFG Long trail TA's) etc.
No skimping on safety on this (re)build.

We have moved on to a different design which should have wider application and solve the problem with the Land Rover brake rattling as well. I'm hoping for the first prototype this week.
You have to remember that its not just a case of knocking something together and turning it into a product. Because the potential liability is so huge, they require a lot of testing and development before they can be sold.
Rockwatt - did the bucket ever come to anything?

I thought about building my own system for about 10 minutes, but dismissed the idea for similar concerns about safety. I could probably knock up something that uses Vectra rear calipers (or similar) and even uses standard disks - but assuming that lot fit, there's always something you haven't thought of. When the truck was an offroad only toy, that'd be acceptable - it's been dropped on it's head a couple of times, been drowned, blah blah - but it's now going to be made into a road legal daily driver.
And that's a whole other ballgame, especially when I know family members are going to end up driving the thing.
I think I'll just buy a new set of pads, cylinder(s) drum etc, and if/when you guys come up with something bulletproof, I'll come looking. I'll fit line-locks for extra holding power when offroading in the meantime.
I *would* offer to help test any system you came up with if the car was still a toy, but as I said in the last post, I'm after tried and tested surefire reliability with this build, and as experienced as you obviously are, I'm not wanting to put experimental bits on a car that will have my brother and his baby in it!

Just to add to an old post when I had mine I found that there were two land rover hand brake cables with the same part number. One was much thicker than the other and harder to bend. The thicker one (might have been britpart) simply wouldn't work on my truck which didn't have a body lift. From memory Simon ended up sourcing a thinner one for me.
I found performance was good but the pads did wear, I also had a rear disk conversion with rover brakes and they wore pretty quick too.
