What sort of fuel consumption would you expect from a 6 pot petrol 404 on standard wheel equipment? and are they easy carbs' to set up?

Hmmm, 404 fuel economy! I often get asked this question, and because its so thirsty I have never even attempted to work it out. Just fill it up and don't tell the misses Wink
The carb is quite easy to set up, there are two idle mixture screw, basic setting is to screw them right in (gently) and then undo three 'hald turns'
The main jets are fixed so require no adjustment, but they do block up sometimes.
The workshop manual is usefull for more info, and can be downloaded for free fromthe benzworld site.

im running mine on stright lpg whitch is giving around 10mpg ,i would expect a well set up petrol set up to give a little better consumption due to its higher power output ,but still only low teens.

Max 5 km/l. Usually around 2,5 to 3,5 km/l when doing small trips and/or offroad. Fitting two carbs actually improved my economy with around 1km/l all around

Mmmmmmmmmmmm(strokes chin) that's bearable considering a 2,25 petrol L@#$R###r struggles for more than 15mpg, Now, for purely off road work will a 404 all fuel manifold allow it to run on 28second heating oil, like an old tractor once it's warmed up.

The conpretion ratio would sute tvo , its wether the manifold gets hot anothe to turn the fuel to vaper fully ,would be legal if taxed ag or historic ag mc , under the exemption made for TVO enginesto the vintage clubs.I think you would need to create a hot plate to go between the carb and manifold or box the manifold to trap the heat from the exaust around the inlet manifold .could be fun finding out.

Dont know how 28 second heating oil compares to traditional TVO? My experience of converting a petrol to TVO was many years ago on a Fegi T20, the kit consisted of 2 head gaskets and a spacer plate (about 2mm) to drop the compression ratio and a vapouriser to preheat the fuel. In action the thing would run on TVO but at somewhat reduced power and the timing had to be jigged around to get it sweet. Also it stank! pre ignition was a problem and if you worked it hard in the field, you could switch off the ignition and still keep going!
Unfortunatley by far the biggest problem was bore washing, the TVO didnt combust very well and very soon the sump oil was diluted by the TVO and became like water.
Just my view, and it was an old engine, but you talk to a lot of old boys and you will hear the same story I think?
We did run a Standard Pennant as a field car, which we started on a squeezy bottle of petrol down the carb and ran on TVO fed through a copper pipe wrapped round the exhaust manifold, but I was young and irresponsible then ................Im not young now!

Go on fit a Diesel.....you know you want it!
