I have just bought a 88" petrol truck cab, its registered oct 1973, whats the chance of it being manufactured before the Historic vehicle cut off date and how could I prove it?

would have thought it was a very slim chance that it sat around for a year and a half un registered.

This is the info I found at the DVLA
The documents you will need to produce
• Vehicle Registration Certificate (V5C) – This must clearly show a date of registration or manufacture of the vehicle before *1 January 1973. If you do not have a V5C or if you think the age shown is incorrect, you will need to produce a dating certificate from a vehicle enthusiasts club or evidence from the vehicle manufacturer.
*Note: Where a V5C indicates that the vehicle was registered up to and including 7 January 1973, we will let you register it as a Historic Vehicle.
So if it was sat around for 10 months I am in with a chance but its a case of proving it, would the chassis number date it?
If its made before 1st Jan 1973 then I am on to a winner

First place of call would by Gaydon, to get a date for when it was made.

I just can afford to tax another vehicle, the insurance at £80 isnt bad but near £200 to tax it is just too much, I have always fancied one so I might just keep it for a few months

I had K reg Range Rover a while back that was first registered in January 1973, and although it was obviously manufactured before that date there was no way I could get tax exempt status on it.

And if you had contacted Gaydon, they will search the records from the production line which will tell you when your vehicle came off it! This is enough evidence for the DVLA to issue Historic Vehicle status.
If your vehicle is proven to be manufactured before the 31st December 1972 then you will definately get historic status, but as said already if it misses by up to the 7th Jan 1973 then you will also get it!

It's been a few years since I owned the Rangey, and the DVLA were, at that time, 100% adamant that it wasn't tax exempt.
I pursued it for a while then just gave up under the weight of bureaucracy and phone bills!

Thats about par for the course i'm afraid. This is where Gaydon is so useful, you get the certificate that proves your case and there can be no arguement from the DVLA, Maybe Gaydon weren't doing it so much when you owned yours?

yes, it was about 10 years ago when I think about it. Time flies!
I sold it to a friend who put it on blocks and sheeted it up, and it's still there. Chances are it will now be proven to be a tax exempt motor.

I spoke to Landrover yesterday, he told me its unlikely as around that time the held almost no stock so the cance of it hanging around or 10 months is small.
I might call Gaydon just in case.

Not that I have seen
I only have the new keeper bit, this shows the date of first registration as oct 1973.
I did speak briefly to a man a Land Rover who told me vehicles in the year didnt hang about and were made to order, so it was doubtful.
I did wonder if it was ex military then road registered two year later?
I wonder if they date stamped components like they do now?

Have you checked the chassis number and where it fits into the scheme of things? The Land Rover could have been used on an estate or in a big factory compound as opposed to being with the Forces.
1962 - 1979
An eight digit chassis numbering system with suffix letters
The first, second, and third digits indicate the model and specification.
241-258,260-324 = Series IIA 88" & 109"
325-339 = Series IIB (110 Inch Forward Control)
340-354 = Series IIA 109"
5424 = Series IIA 88 Station Wagon (US Model) 259, 901-950 = Series III
951-955 & 895 = Lightweight
956-965 = 101 Inch Forward Control
355, 356, 358 = Range Rover
The remaining five digits starting with 00001 indicate the serial number.
The suffix letter indicates design modifications.
Note: The year, or model-year of manufacture have no identification number

I have spoken to Gaydon very helpful but said the same as Landrover,
Usually made and sold within weeks, so not much chance.
I am thinking of selling it as I just have too much stuff, so keep your eye on the classifieds

Hi,
Ask the Land Rover Series 2 Club (google). If you know the chassis number, they can probably tell you where it fitted in the scheme of things.

I'm having a discussion with the DVLA over the details on the V5 for the Alldays. When it was re-registered they got the engine size wrong, the makers name and model wrong and when I moved house they somehow changed the year of manufacture.
I contacted a very nice chap who realised that it was unlikely to have be made in 1992 and could fix that but now I would need to show evidence of the engine size (receipts, engineer cert etc) which in my case is historical documentation. It's not very important to me except for completeness but I have found the DVLA to be the easiest and best Gov Agency to deal with.

Doesn't realy say a lot for the rest
Not found them to be much help, they cock things up then you have to run around to try and prove it

when i wrote off my nova, i sent in my tax disk allong with the form and a letter saying the vehicle has been scrapped, then then sent me a refund on my road tax.
4 months later i got a fine through the door saying i havent paid my road tax
an e-mail to the director of the dvla soon sorted it.

Hi,
The Director doesn't like letters. I understand they affect his bonus.
