Please take 1 minute to read about a ‘Rugged’ Difflock Mobile Phone and Service and kindly take part in the survey.

I should like to point out that this is not a campaign to sell this service via this thread! It is a poll to gauge feedback typically for Forum members.

It includes the following unique, additional features over and above standard phone and SMS:

a. Push to Talk – push a button and use your phone like a walkie-talkie to any other user for free

b. Push to locate – find any of your friends/buddies anywhere in the world, with a single button push

c. Plot History – plot historic journeys over any period of time (google map, mapping software)

d. Video streaming direct to mobile – stay in touch with the news, world affairs, latest 4x4 events and sport

e. Network - Available for UK & French Service providers. World Wide operation will include ALL features

f. A rugged mobile phone that is DUST and Water retardant

If you have an interest in this service, please can you take part in the poll listed above this thread... see above

I have two
Ones £10 a month 200mins unlimited text
the others free as its a works one and as long as I dont abuse it its free.
Whilst I think the service is a good idea I just wouldnt use it.
But I am not really a techno gadet type, I have just renewed my contract and got a shiney new touch screen phone, but I just gave it to our son and carried on using my 4 year old flip

That is something that seems to be common in the US but never took of here. I reckon it's a great idea and especially useful for us when off roading seeing as CB's and PMR's are not brilliant all the time.

Whether I could break my 2 year Orange contract to get one is another matter ....

mobiles, On private, one company Paid.

Comapny Phone regularly sees bill's of up to 200 a month.. Private Phone Between 35 a Month and 185 a Month ( high Data useage as frequently travelling overseas ).

Wish UK mobile networks activated the PTT feature they have in the US & Canada .

My mobile is £15pm line rental 600mins free calls to mobiles and landlines 600 free texts and unlimited free internet. In general my bill amounts to less than £25pm, I dont use any other phone as its cheaper to call using my mobile than a landline.

I have had loads of phones with the PTT feature but none of them have worked in the UK as the networks dont support it which I find very strange as the UK has one of the most up to date cellular systems in the world, the US is about 3 generations behind and they have PTT support!?

Im guessing that the PTT feature on this handset would be PMR?

PTT over cellular (PoC) is currently available in the UK but not directly from the networks. It is relatively expensive and, obviously, only works when all users are in coverage.

The reason it is more popular in the states is the cost of providing radio coverage over vast areas and the fact that cellular service is dictated by the masses and text messaging is the big thing in UK.

Take a look at Otterbox Armor, makes your iPhone waterproof etc... I'm looking at getting one for when I'm competing.

4 phones on Orange. Mine, hers, both 'kids' (though they are 18 and 16 and the older one pays me back!).

Then i have typically at least 3 smart phones i use for work (i'm the 'phone guy')

As far as this poll goes, a Nokia 5800 with Viewranger and a 3g connection will do pretty much everything on the list. Under £200 for the device and basic maps.

Add a protective pouch (the 5800 has a resistive screen, so it can feel a touch through the bag, unlike the Iphone/pod and my i8910) and the only thing left is PTT, which the Euro networks don't support. Only network i know of that does is Nextel in the US, and they use proprietry devices.

I have a samsung pixxon 8 mega pixel phone which I cannot stand! Even worse, I'm lumbered with it for another 6 months with an 18 month contract! 6 months with a crap phone and no manufacturers warrenty (that was up after 12 months)!

I need a more rugged phone with a better contract. I hadly use mine and pay over 40 quid a month! I'm a mug.

Pete

This could be fun as a second phone - I have been considering such since switching to iPhone and being too scared to take it off-roading.

a. Push to Talk – push a button and use your phone like a walkie-talkie to any other user for free

Sounds great

b. Push to locate – find any of your friends/buddies anywhere in the world, with a single button push

I have no friends on Difflock Wink

c. Plot History – plot historic journeys over any period of time (google map, mapping software)

Sounds GREAT. I have built this function using a tracker (see laralive.org) but it would be great to have a commercial offering.

d. Video streaming direct to mobile – stay in touch with the news, world affairs, latest 4x4 events and sport

Not bothered

e. Network - Available for UK & French Service providers. World Wide operation will include ALL features

Any chance of a good international roaming deal, especially on data?

f. A rugged mobile phone that is DUST and Water retardant

Must have..

Sounds like an interesting project - Will it come in orange or lime green ?
