Can you legally, or can you physically, or do you have the skills to do it?

Legally: there is no such thing as a "green lane". Some roads, bridges, etc have weight limits, by no means is there a class of road with a blanket weight limit on it though, etc.

Phyiscally - many green lanes are too narrow or twisty to fit anything much larger than a normal sized 4x4 down (and many are too narrow even for these, etc).

I wasn't aware on any road type having any limits on the numbers of axles on a vehicle.

I'm 99% sure there's no legal element to stop you, but common sense should surely prevail when it comes down to ground conditions (lorries/unimogs are heavy, ground is soft), height restrictions (lorries are much taller than even Landrovers, so branches etc will cause a problem)

BUT, all said, for tracks like the ones you find around here (Wiltshire), they're generally fairly hard chalk packed down, especially around salisbury plain; where to be honest, the military drive around all day in 4 and 10 tonners and much heavier armoured stuff.

And remember... if you do get stuck, you'll need a friggin big winch or tirfor to get unstuck! Shocked

but seriously, thats good to know. lately ive been developing a bit of a thing for big trucks, and wouldn't mind one with biblically large tyres to cruise some of the wider lanes in Very Happy

im not known for my abundance of common sense hehe.

as for getting stuck... i had better make sure i fit a camper on the back then really shouldn't i... may as well be comfortable whilst waiting for natural erosion to free me!! Smile

I'm sure Farmer Palmer has driven his tractor down many-a-byway getting around his fields and the track on one of the New Holland or Case modern tractors are pretty wide, although nobody is going to give him any grief.

Unless it was a pretty wide lane I'd say even though there's probably no legal element to stop you (per-se) you'd carve such a channel through the undergrowth that people would think it was being purposefully destructive and probably earn you nothing but an ear bending.

That said I'm just jealous. Laughing

I use a green lane regularly as it is conveniently a very good short cut. However the other week the farmer decided to dump a massive trailer load of horse **** right in the middle.

I accepted his challenge and drove straight up and over it :-&

Idea
Obviously that is 'Report him or her' if you are sure that it is a 'Green Lane' on which you have the legal right to be driving. Wink

(then you will need to know that it was 'the farmer' and not some other 'farmer' or someone that leases the ground next to the 'Green Lane'
That is for the authorities to check out anyway, not your worry
so 'Report the incident'.
Other legal users will surely also be bothered by the actions of whoever it is attempting to block the route.)

I never said I was worrying Very Happy

It is a legitimate lane; if it becomes any-more of a minor inconvenience I will contact the local authorities as you guys said.

Sorry to ressurect an old thread; but I have both driven unsurfaced rights of way as well as observing large vehicles driving them.

My own use was either an Iveco or MAN 7.5t single driven axle or the Iveco 4.5t 4x4. They usually coped well enough. We also drove through fields (carefully) and planned routes for access as there were also cherrypickers mounted on the lorries.

A colleague drove 17t Iveco 4x4 26m (Wumag) cherrypicker around various lanes in Cornwall and Wiltshire for various comms companies to put up mobile phone systems as well as Airwave.

I got to be in the passenger seat of a Unimog with a rear mounted cherrypicker and front mounted HIAB (plus a pair of winches) going down Strata Florida for the option of photographing it and taking line of sights on various places to get mobile phone towers in. That was in 2005. We covered most of the area around there at the time, with a lot of waiting in laybys for the commo guys to stick it up where they wanted it...

I think the main issue with larger vehicles is the gearing, drive train and width. A fair few of the 18t Iveco's with HIABs, cranes or cherrypickers tend to have 6 regular gears, lower geared with a central or rear locking diff in it. 1st gear is sometimes too fast.

The 4.5t Iveco I drove had a low range, as did the various LR110 and LR130s.

Now I'm into Radio's I wouldn't mind owning a LR110 cherrypicker Wink

Just another thought ... my old Volvo 6x6 had much lower ground pressure than a normal big 4x4 and with 6wd it seldom got stuck in ruts and therefore caused much less damage than you might think.

That said I did get it 'stuck' on the flat in 3" of gloop up against a 2" high 'ridge' and needed the able assistance of a nice Jimny to get moving again.

Still a valid question though . Over the years as an 8 wheeler Tipper driver In bhave delivered many loads down Green Lanes , be it for Farmers , Utility co, or local Councils , I always walk them first , if in doubt I tip and let the Dumpers take it , I have seen trucks turn over a few times as most lanes are unstable for 32 tons ,

You can certainly get Artic's down lanes... Not sure how short their long trailers would have to be though Very Happy

and I've seen regular artic tractor units down lanes too. Our last laning trip had a hi-roof Volvo C303 6x6 with us Wink
