I'm fairly certain that I know the answer to this question, but I want your thoughts.
Am I better off with two 'Jate rings' attached to the chassis for snatch recovery, or just one huge NATO hitch attached to the tow bar?
I think the former, what do you guys think?

Surely the NATO hitch is the way to go is it not
I thought that JATE rings are for lashing down & the word JATE is a nmnemonic that comes from 'Joint Air Transport Evaluation unit.
Quote: | Proper U shaped JATE rings are designed by the Joint Air Transport Establishment which is British Military unit.
It tests and trials ANYTHING that would be put in or under a British military transport aircraft/helicopter.
Jate rings hold land rovers in the back of Hercules and C17 Globemasters when flying all around the world either tactically (low level) and straight and flat.
Also when you see land rovers etc slung under helicopters Jate rings are what are holding them there.
the rings are strong enough, but like mentioned earlier the mounting points need to be as strong. |

You dont say on what vehicle.
In my opinion standard towbars with standard fixing are not for recovery's
Not snatch type recovoreries anyway.
And a NATO hitch makes no difference from a recovery eye,
If the towbar fixing isnt up to the job.
(meant for different forces in a towing action)
Lots depends on the total soundness of the chassis & fixing points etc.
A gentle tow or winch out is different from a fully stuck situation with a 2 tonne plus vehicle.
2 good welded on recovery points at each end,
& a bridle attached to reduce the chance of damage is my prefered option.
george
PS there are plenty of suppliers of JATES for recovery,
rather than the original tie down JATES.
A generic term now really.

I'd say after market jate rings.....
Or if ye have a steering guard there are wide ones available
But as said above, make sure the chassis is sound....

hmmmm, however a NATO hitch is held on to the X-member with 4 x HT bolts, with spreader plates front and back.
JATE rings 1 bolt each, through an area of the chassis with zero reinforcement.
Also, I think I'd prefer to be recovered with the D-type forged? JATE rings rather than the 3-piece welded ones.....

A quick update, I'm about to remove the standard tow ball off the Disco and fit this Dixon Bate hitch that I've had for years. It'll do for recovery and towing the 'van.
It just needs a lick of paint and some new bolts!

Hi all,
We are in the early stages of planning a trip to Africa and are working on our equipment budget.
After many hours of searching the internet we are struggling to find anyone nearby that could supply the equipment we need.
We are looking for a specialist company somewhere in Wales who could supply/fit the equipment, ie., winch, compressor, under vehicle protection and suspension etc. Does anyone know of such a company, don't really want to add to the budget by having to travel to far away places like England to get equipment fitted, In a nutshell looking for a company like matt savage or Nene overland and the likes. Any ideas Thanks...

Hi, I'd start a new thread if I were you. You've popped this on the end of a 'vehicle recovery' thread. If it were me, I'd probably start a new post, in this section, headed something like 'is there a decent vehicle prep company in Wales?..' or similar. You might get a better response. All the best and good luck with Africa.
