Yeh, Vickers link. Probably an aeroplane idea originally?
I was thinking the other day I should have kept the old steering box from the 72' for that conversion. But I get less and less interested the better we get with the three winches. I think the next 'trick' will be trying those new steel ramps as a pillar to lift the truck up on the front winch.
Anyhoo, I guess it doesn't matter if you use the standard PS box and don't connect it to a pump?

I'm still thinking there ought to be a way of electro-pump boosting to an axel ram that only comes in when the normal 4bolt PS gets to 90% pressure? Then the turn speed would be free from engine speed.

I have a 3 bolt steering box in mine- and we were planning on just using that how it is plumbed in and just run 2 pumps. We may find that doesn't work and then ill probably get an early defender box to get rid of the 2 pumps.

Quite likely possible, I'm not sure the pressure is the issue; the trouble we've had is that the main shaft in the box is twisting. Not sure if it's the same in the 3 bolt but it's gone notchy. And that was a good box with only 30000 miles and having done one race.

Hopefully this will sort the issue by taking the load off of the box - if it doesn't, I will probably just go for full hydro I just don't want to yet.

The next issue is getting a suitable pulley on the 2.25 to run a supercharger.

Oh and speeding up the winch- we are thinking of a steering quickner in the drive shaft, but I worry that it will get too hot, or just grenade itself.

Steering quickener will definitely explode Smile
Need more speed? Just make the drum bigger!

I'd try the 3 bolt with no oil pump to see how it worked with the Vickers link? No reason to assume it will do anything but work fine. They were a common retro-fit on tractors. All you want is a 'trigger' to move the valve on the back of the ram. If allowed, you could probably take the handle bars off a quad and throw the 3 bolt away!
It works just like the 3 bolt box and all the others, but in this case the valve is on the outside instead of hidden in the input of the PS box. It might sound mad, but you might have dropped on the thing gets the best of full hydro (no feedback) and OE (no strength) Cool

We need to speed it up about 3x to get winching in 1st equal to driving. In 4th it's great, but due to the nature of pto winches...
The other option is just to build a new pto.

The only reason to keep the steering box is to keep it with a mechanical link. Hence I like the vickers link- and as you say, it should work fine. My thing at the moment is how to prevent bending the ram- I'm thinking of just going for a high steer knuckle and lift it as far out of the way as possible.

Incase anyone wondered how the landy is getting along these days, we are now sponsored by giggle pin winches so no issues with slow old PTO winches, and there's a sexy wrap on the car. She's in the workshop at the moment getting a 300tdi transplant and a few other upgrades ready for the 2016 season

Cool
