hi, so been a while since an update...
the bigger wheels work even better than the dumpers! just more grip than you need sometimes! as my cv's will agree... Embarassed
the old 2.25 is getting a bit tired- now its on gas its getting a much harder life with running at much more severe angles... so while it still goes it smokes alot! soon i might have the option of a near as dammit brand new 2.25 (well 8000 miles from new..!) so hopefully that should be a reasonable engine... Laughing
i bought 100ft of new synthetic winch rope the other day, so that should be better than the old steel cable... only the winch blew up last week Twisted Evil basically, both solenoids stuck open and shorted it out, the motors scrap and so's most of the wiring in the winch box... Evil or Very Mad but every cloud has a silver lining... and im going to bolt a hydraulic motor into it (as i have discussed with teamidris a number of times)
yesterday we had another issue with electrics as the coil got so hot it burned me! luckily it still works once its cooled down, so we're going to fit 2 coils, that way if one goes i can swap to the 2nd without huge issues.
ive done a fewother things like fitted a heater in the rear to stop the gas from freezing up, and a windscreen etc. nothing massive, although in the next month we will be fitting my patrol axles, as i have 3 weeks off... Very Happy
other than that its been a great year as far as the landy goes, winning 4 out of 6 events and the other 2 getting 2nd. Cool

I don't want a windscreen to break, but it solves a lot of problems. I could have decent bonnet vents and a short snorkel. It may come to pass Very Happy

Hydraulic diff-winch in the back Twisted Evil
Milemarker is 6:1, LR diff is 4.5:1 ? Decent speed.

My favorite little LHD vit had alligators on, and they were flippin' awsome Cool

^ the windscreen wont break, it lifts off Wink Laughing

so, we had our first shot at trialling yesterday... nott too bad, except i cocked up the first section... Embarassed booted it before the water and sluttered to a stop... that would be a 6 then... Embarassed other than that and the 2nd to last section went ok, got a few 1's, 2's and a clear, then on the 7th section i got a 7 by not seeing the cane and driving over it... Embarassed other than that only a minor setback- the pas belt came off and left us with no pas for 2 sections- ironicly i did better on those sections... Laughing i was quite happy for a first attempt...

overall not bad... although a slightly more bent steering arm... so today ive been removing the patrol axles- theyre both off, going to start prepping the rear axle later! Very Happy Cool she's also going to be having a metal roof and some extra cage. plus a few other mods to comply with the awdc regs. nothing serious though. Smile

Hey Noah

Your driving was spot on but the engine spluttering let you down mate. You don't have to have a roof but if you do not have one, you have to wear a helmet.

If your car was running properly you would have got 1st in tyro.

i dont know, 7th section was embaressing but hey Laughing

im going to have a look at the dizzy cap, used to have a glove over it, looks like thats the route again! the roof isnt a neccesity, but i wouldnt mind, if just for keeping the branches off my head a bit... Laughing

Patrol axles!! atlast!! unfortunatly not fitted- and a few setbacks...
ill start at the rear as that is the one going on first.
so first they came off, with the aid of our old digger...

then out came the tools!

And the axles are on the floor! this is where i started prep'ing the rear axle, however this took a week as i did my silver duke of edinborough exped, had a bad stomack (sick every 20 mins for 2 days- not good!) then a funeral, so no time for the landy... anyway, i came back to her today, ive ordered a tractor 3 point balljoint that should get here monday, this will give me an adjustable rear rose jointed a-frame for not stupid money.... then i decided to red-oxide the rear axle before painting black. aswell as this i realised im going to have to fabricate some kind of gueard for the vacuum locker set up as it is in a fairly vulnerable position. i will worry about that once its fitted... Laughing

so after painting the rear axle i decided to go and strip the hub down on the front so i could see the damage of the cv... it was pretty devastating... not only has the cv gone, the hub is knackered, the 1/2 shaft is scrap and the brake disk is cracked... after pricing it up it will be cheaper to replace the whole axle- after doing all the seals etc. bit of a shame as i was hoping to have her running on 6 stud axles for a trial on sunday... i guess thats out the window... ohwell, i'd rather have done it right rather than rushed it. Smile

Looking good, like the way you "disassembled" the old Patrol Very HappyVery Happy
If i'm not mistaken you struck luck with those patrol rims, they are 16" right? Then you can just swap over your dumper tyres Wink

aha, we only used the digger to put it on its side, but its soo much easier to un bolt suspension thats been rusted on for 20 years when you can actually get to it! Laughing

yep theyre 16's, my alligators will be going on them, although i have about 4 sets of 6 stud 16" rims now.. Embarassed so im going to have a set of less agressive for trialling (i have to drive in TYRO, basically a junior class because of my age, meaning i cant run any really agressive tyres) Twisted Evil a set of alligators, and im looking for a set of 750/20 dumpers such as would be on a 109 roadless as i will gain a few inches groundclearence. ive sold my dumpers now though Crying or Very sad

haha ofcourse you would say that... Wink Laughing

well, still waiting on the rear balljoint and doing some research about the front axle to see if a more available patrol axle will run the same... so i've painted the rear axle black, and will be taking the calipers off tommorrow to spray them. generally just doing "things" to keep it moving.

i also measured it against our big trailer... she's too wide! Shocked just over 6ft 2" wide Shocked the patrol axles are an extra 4" at standard landy-patrol patrol offset, meaning if i put the same offset wheels on patrol axles she wont fit on any of our trailers without the tyres hangine off the side... Embarassed Shocked

so. after the trouble with the front axle, im now having issues finding a front axle Mad so, depending what is available it might be a case of rebuilding the axle... the trouble is a shaft is as hard to get hold of as a whole axle. Twisted Evil Rolling Eyes so focusing on the rear axle again..
christmas came early..

sprayed these...

i guess you cant say theyre normal Laughing

cleaned up the top of the acle for the a frame mount.

then i fitted the new tyres, theyre an inch and a half taller than the old ones...

Looking good, how tall are those tyres, when you measure them?
Re axle parts, I know from all the guys that run Patrol axles here in Denmark, that parts are readily available, and that you can get, at least the CV as a pattern part, way cheaper than the original (Though still MUCH more expensive than a pattern landrover unit Very Happy)
And when they break the halfshaft they never seem to have any trouble finding new ones. So it might be worth for you looking at Danish scrappers? Anyways, just a suggestion.. Smile

Hi, i havent had a chance to update this for a while as i was sailing on a tall ship... Cool Very Happy
but the other week we did get her running on the patrol rear axle. the suspension works even better and she sits around an inch taller. not sure if i like that but with an extra 2 inches width and the axles being heavier shouldnt be an issue. i didnt get many pics as the day was mad and very hard work.. we ended up moving ever mount from lr axle to the patrol axle... but now its done it ent coming off!! Laughing and even better i think ive got hold of a front axle... Very Happy so in the next few weeks maybe more updates Cool

so, after a massive drive for the front axle (5 hours each way to lincoln...) we are back on track, with a superior front axle. i managed to find a y61 front axle for a reasonable price though apart from the tyres still the most expensive part on the landy Laughing anyway, i spent yesterday getting the old axle out and lining up the new one, and dad set about wiring up the locker.

the rear set up:

rear prop went well...

and i think the landy's sitting quite nicely...

but a bit wide...

some bits to do with the locker, solenoids and the vaccuum resevoir, these are now fully plumbed and working, i just need to route the wire for the switch.

theres a point of no return...

and this is where i left it, lining it all up is a 2 man job as its so heavy!

It drives!!! Very Happy Cool well... it would if the front diff was the right ratio.
so stuff left to do on the...
axles

-finish wiring the locker, route the wires back to the cab.
-take the front axle out again
-spray all suspension and steering links and front calipers
-swap front diff
-make front shock mounts
-find different springs as patrol ones on the front are too hard
-paint axle
-paint different set of rims
-fit tyres up on different set of rims
-brakes

overall project

-make roof
-make additions to the cage
-change steering box
-make up mounts for harnesses
-re paint
-fit NOS
-rebuild and fit winch
-rear screen for awdc regs

so mostly just cosmetic bits left, along with a few bigger bits. i think another weekend should see the axle swap done then the rest can be sorted as we go. Very Happy

how well could the hockey sticks have lined up??? Cool

the shocks are going to be behind the spring.

if i bend this steering arm, im doing well. one of little toes old trailing arms measured perfect for the steering arm.

change the front springs and we should have a bit more travel than before...

well, ive got a turbo or nos, i want to stick with the 2.25 as in general it aint bad, but i'd like a bit more "oomph" for the climbes such as the one at othery that we failed, i have 2 options really, ive got a turbo and ive got a nos kit... well, injectors, wiring etc, now my reasoning behind nos rather than turbo, is that there will be more power, less of the time, meaning i can choose when i want the boost and only use the power when needed but have more of it, whereas with a turbo it will be running less boost all the time, but not neccaserily where i want or need it, effectively putting more stress on the engine for longer periods of time. just my thoughts Laughing

Chris?

me?

trucks good, need to rebuild the rear diff as the stupid plastic cage broke on the first run & did the rest of the event in 3wd,

other than that got to straighten the bashplate out & replace one of the radius arm mounts as it got tweaked, other than that not too bad, a good weekend doing prev maintenance will be good to go racing again,

gonna fit full hydro steer & time to go fast or go home
