What's your price range?
I'd say that non are suited for greenlaning.

none for green lanes is that because of size
price will be as cheap as i can get my hands on one looking at ebay there not cheap by any means but it also looks like one can be had for around £4000
so i guess the next question will be are there places that mogs can be had cheap all be it needing work maby even a shell or somthing

I use my 404 for greenlaning, they look big at first glance but its not that much wider then a Land rover or Range rover.

Also, living in Hampshire, you have the luxury of the greenlanes on and around Salisbury Plain, which are generally large enough for the bigger Mogs.

I've a 1969 421, 2 litre OHC diesel mog which is bearable for running on the road and will manage low 20's per gallon but it pays to be in no hurry whatsoever as it is quite under powered when going up hill, however it's wheel base is only 88" ( same as a swb L***R****) and it weighs a shade over 2.2 tonnes so it can easily be moved on an Ifor Williams for play days, it also has the step axles, difflocks and enormously tight turning circle so it's quite capable on the rough.

Ah, sorry, you asked about running costs.
I have a 1980 U1000 (with 130bhp pump upgrade)
15mpg
Will sit happily at 55mph.
Service parts are reasonable.
Full set of pads £35 ( all 6 calipers)
Clutch £300
Oil filter£8
Fuel filter£7x2
Air filter£15
I do all my own maintenance.
Some parts will make your eyes water though, however it has been the most reliable 4x4 I have ever owned.

I was looking for a SWB U900, but have bought a U1300L and havent looked back. Its not too big (bigger than a 404 - at least it looks bigger than a 404) Atkinson Vos sometimes have cheaper U1300L that need a bit of work on the cab/body. There are always a few 404,s for sale here and there. All Mogs are very capable to the point of making Landrovers look silly and even Pinzgauers cannot go where a Mog can. (I have always had and liked Landrovers, but Like for like, you could buy a fleet of Landrovers for the price of a MOG so you pays your money and you takes your choice)

ohhh could make for some intresting lane trips
i think its somthing that is stuck in me i have always wanted a mog
so a 404 would be a good direction to take as far as model
play grounds are not that much of an issue as like above sailsbury is up the road and the AWDC also have heavy days at a MOD site 20mins from me
so a 404 next question is what sort of body plans are about or can chassis and running gear be bought and a body fitted/built without too many issues
if i was to budget for say £4000 what would likely be available in that range and what state would it be in
thanks so far guys and gals its a big help

You should be able to get a top notch 404 for that money.

sounds good then
i would rather spemd less and fix up tho to be honest as welding and body work is no problems getting a lumpy old engine going should be ok as long as it turns over in the first place
