pete no you know you'll spend even more time under it then! Just sort out the wires and start with the simple things, rotor arm, dizzy cap, leads etc. I'm sure it something simple.

And dont worry im going through the same, just replaced all the brakes, a wheel bearing, plugs, dizzy cap etc and then i broke down 400m from my house because my alternator packed up and the battery light didnt come on!

2 white wires with yellow tracer???? not sure about that? there should only be one! it should go from the battery + via a fusable link and to the alternator. i would just blank one of them off and see what happens Rolling Eyes

Here is a wiring diagram that might help (well if its the right one Laughing )

Also is the missing constant or intermitent, is it firing on all 4? is it only firing on the same cylinders each time or random ones? pop each HT lead of and see if it makes any difference to the running of the engine? there might still be a spark but if its not getting enough voltage it wont fire. this can sometimes be related to the alternator not charging.

strange car so one white/yellow wire should be there

the miss fire was intemitten and totaly random i thought that was fuel related and not electrical so i replaced the fillters and changed back to the mechanical pump over the electric one and the problem continues so its must be electrical

timmed the car up again to see if that helped and still the problem is there all dizzy cap leads and arm is good as are the plugs and every thing elese just the miss and now melted wires to fight with

That sounds exactly like what mine is doing! my dad seems to think it is related to the alternator as its not supplying any charge so the coil wont be getting enough current to kick out a strong spark constantly!

Put a mulitmeter (on voltage) across the battery as it is running Alt should kick out about 13.3 v when engine off battery should haold about 12.3V

Check engine to chassis earth strap can sometimes cause misfire and earthing through random cables or thottle cable even.

Red hot melting cables and burnt out car can be the end result, ask my mate Crying or Very sad he was in his at the time Shocked

As well as the main engine earth strap, make sure the one between the dizzy and the bulkhead is on as well. It shouldn't make much difference, if the engine earth is good but mine ran a lot better with it cleaned up and connected properly.

'snot carb icing is it? Confused

is yours a spanish sammy pete?? my spansish one has two large wires
from alt and one small one. one goes direct to battery and the other
feeds the fuse box inside. when i put the engine in mine we connected
them together and then on to the alternator. the small one is the tell tale
in the dash.

I'm no expert on car electrics but this is what I would do:: as has been
said, stick a meter accross it while its running and get the voltage. try
this at a veriety of different RPM's and see if it goes up dramatically. It
shouldn't get much above 14.5v if the alt is working correctly. If you get
higher readings than that then I think there is a regualtor inside it
somewhere which has packed up. Either new alt time or try and get the
regulator out and change that?? no idea if its possible though..

Joel.

There is a good chance it will be a broken down P38,
the only working electrical component will be one headlight.
george

PS, handily you can plug them in to find the fault codes.
Put a '£ ' sign in front of the code number,
this will probably be what one costs you to repair.

Buy a Jeep Cherokee 25td. Mine was reliable as hell, very good off road, parts where cheaper and easier to find that the jeep.

The gearing was so low i could put it into 4L and walk next to it. Plus the diffs are bullet proof as long as you dont have a heavy right foot.

The best bit i found was the cost. Did 35mpg and to get 31s under neath a 120 quid shackle and spring spacer kit. Full electronics...

Only downside you will find is that modified ones are hard to come by and the powering steering was built for the heavier jeeps. As a result the steering is light, but offroading after 3 hours in the deep stuff my hands didn't feel tired at all. Ow and the heater was lovely.

But each to there own.....and saying that the next jeep on my list will be a Honda CRV, with a 2inch lift

Cheers
Andy

well i did take a shine to your ex mod light weight friday i must say

my lisf of owend 4x4s is a fair one i have had most

landrover 2a petrol truck cab,

1995 disco 3.9 full learther, auto, the works but sufferd with abs cooking the brakes to often offroad

mk1 cherokee 4.0 ltd again all the toys (loved it)

a petrol fourtrak (as a shooting wagon)

two sportraks (useless in the mud blew to many front diffs and tranferboxes trying to get them where i wanted)

mk1 pajero 2.5td (found it as a pile of rust one morning when leaving for work)

and my current daily is a mk2 pajero 2.5td its one of the most reliable cars i have ever had and im over the moon with it but i have the itch for an old l200 crew cab Embarassed

two vitaras (never again)

six sj,s every one is bloody good offroad but my current one is just not happy and needs some time smoothing out the faults but a V8 may be on the cards for next year or sell up my three zooks and a car trailer and get a unimog to play with

there are others but not worth listing (mk1 fiat panda 4x4) so yes i have had a few diffrent off road cars and each have there place and terrain that they are suited to

So your no closer to working out what it is then?? I'm having similar problems, really lumpy idle but if you give it a quick burst of throttle it sounds spot on, however if you slowly increase the revs it is lumpy as hell! starting to think its the carb so might throw it at the neighbours dog and fit an SU! just so happens I blagged an SU for free today Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

no buddy but im sure mine is related to the alt problems

im running an SU on the engine as is and no im not getting ice up Laughing my snorkle pipe is routed about three inches from the exhaust manifold and i dont even get condesation on the adaptor on the intake side its that warm in my engine bay janspeen good for power and heating

as for your car that sounds like a fuel problem have you look at your fillters

were your emissions high or low at your MOT

see I thought mine was related to the alt, but i just bunged a 1300 one on there for the time being its only 5 amps less so cant see it making much of a difference! I've only just changed the fuel filter so i dont think thats the problem Very Happy I was thinking the jets were blocked? however i whipped one of the plugs off and it was black suggesting either over fuelling or got a weak ignition? i've also tried a different rotor arm, leads and dizzy cap Sad

its odd

3 cars same problems.................. no idea why Laughing

well if i get five at the weekend i will swap my alt over and see how that fairs im hoping santa brings me a new multimeter for crimbo as mine is still dead

i want to run my car up and see if the alt is over charging and that is the cause of the melt down, if not then i will have to look into other things like earths and stuff

ummm you car...... the only thing i can think is a fuel problem but you cant adjust the auto choke carbs can you Question somthing i have never done anyway. if you have the SU the knock an adaptor up and bolt her on you need to swap the throttle cable for a longer one i used a right hand drive mgb cable (left hand drive is shorter) fetching yellow and about a meter longer than std zook Wink
