Hey yall

I am building my daihatsu fourtrak thomas into a mean mud flinging machine. To do this i must complete a series of tasks. Just now Thomas is in a bit of a sorry state but when i am finished he will be cool.

The plan is to get rid of all possible rust and reapint him NATO green (matt). The reason for only doing this is that i have fixed the transmission and everything mechanically works well. Very Happy I also need to weld a box section in reaplacement of the sills, make new towing points at the back and weld up a couple of holes here and there.

Once this is done the rear diff will be getting welded up as it is only off road.(because i am 15) Once the rear diff has been welded i shall get a snazzy steering wheel and bucket seat. I will then get more power from turbo as i am researching into how to tweek it. (It already has 235/75R15 Kingpin amazons)

Wheelspacers will also be going on and some wheels from a mates suzuki vitara. After these tasks have been done i will begin to think about phase two but i will be posting pictures up on this thread as i complete tasks on the car so you can follow the awesomeness.

Any comments on what my plans are are welcome.

WEE DAVE Very Happy

Jamie, He's not that much of a numpty - he has the tyres the right way round.

Good start Dave. Why change the steering wheel though? They have big steering wheels for a reason, probably because there is no power steering.

Looks like your working conditions are worse than mine - Brrrrrr!

And what is Henry doing in your barn? Laughing

Space heater Shocked Kindling in a bag Shocked In my day we had to go out and rub frozen sticks together after we cut the tree down and chopped it up with pointy stones!!
Ahem, anyway good to see some progress there. Be mindfull that the space heater will leave a lot of condensation on the panels at this time of year. You can either use something like a halogen lamp or electric heater or maybe even a water based paint. It might be an idea to leave the painting 'till later in the spring. I'm sure there's a bit of mechanical work you can do just now. The panels will also have more chance of getting scratched if you paint them now and are working on the car afterwards.
Is it true about the 4th wheel being backwards? Vee hav vays of knowing!

Ill speak for Dave as i was over helping prep the panels yesterday and moaning about the cold, i dont think hes overly bothered about scratches hes just wanting to get on so we can get out driving, and we werent using the heater as we couldnt get it to light! It was freezing! Rolling Eyes Razz

Thank you for the input jamie about my foolishness with the direction of the tyre pattern (it is true only one of them is the right way round Laughing )

The car does have power steering KiteSurf.

I have nothing mechanical to work on so i am going to crack on with the paint. I know i wont get a great finish but in a shed full of kindling and other garden work orientated items but i might aswell get it done and get out driving Twisted Evil !!

By the way, Kitesurf Henry was not placed there he was mysteriously discovered as Jamie and i looked through the photies, looking at my badly painted bonnet Laughing .

Thanks for the encouragement more photies going up in a couple of days, hopefully will have the front end completely painted and thinking about replacing the sills with box section.

Hey guys

Due to my mother caring about my education and exams etc my progress on my car has been slowed down which is the main reason no posts have been put up over the past couple of months.

I have now got more of the car painted and started on the new suspension which will be going on possibly next weekend. I have also with the halp of my mate managed to cut new wheelarches and are not very rusty at all.

Hopefully more pictures and progress regarding the new front suspension any comments etc are welcome and would be appreciated.

WEE DAVE Very Happy

We are half way through swapping the front springs for new ones, as the old ones are bent. We are also going to be making towing points for the rear and eventualy a front bumper, also box section sills and welding up a few holes. So plenty too do at the moment and the rusty sh*t box isnt half a PITA so everything takes longer then expected.

"weld diff" is true but harsh Very Happy Rich is in a bad mood today Shocked (see his other posts)

As most of the time we all get over obstacles by hitting the lould pedal, it has to be 'bouncing off things' protection! So things like home made diff gaurds/sliders, maybe a belly pan and probably a bit of front & wing protection. Anything that lets you blast into stuff without worrying about consequence Very Happy Confindence in your truck is your best off road aid Cool

No the car will never ever be used on the road too much or a rust box for that Laughing A welded rear diff was an option but my uncle who is a mechanic said it can effect steering and stuff Confused Is this a real problem for off road only??

No, it will not effect steering if its the rear axle welded, well, it may slightly as it has a tendency to push the rear end more when cornering, but the difference will be fairly small, i think he will be refering to welding the front diff, which will then become hard to turn.

Have a look at revolver or scissor shackle if you want some more suspension travel. Crude scissor shackles can be home made pretty easily and safely without much effort.
