...We have gotten around to starting the modifications on the Jeep!

Woo hoo!!! Laughing

It's gonna be a long slow road, but one day I'll have the Jeep of my dreams, I'm sure!

To start with, we set about fitting the 'Hidden Hitch' receiver that my crappy ex-local stealership were creating such a fuss about fitting. They made it out to be a HUGE job and it took us under an hour (and we didn't even have to drop the gas tank out like they said they were going to!)

We also fitted the bug shield I had on the last Jeep (to compensate for the fact the Jeep has all the aerodynamics of a brick!).

...and for those who were wondering...the hood of a TJ is not the same shape, etc as a YJ hood, but it was cheaper to make this fit than buy a new shield!

And finally............

(for this week, anyways!)

We fitted the snorkel I got for my 30th birthday back in August (to prevent my killing THIS Jeep like I did the last one!).

Well, I say 'we' but it was pretty much all Wavey...I spent the time making the coffees and helping Mo with his VFR! Ha ha!!

Drilling holes in my precious Jeep's body panels was the first order of the day.

Understandably I chose not to be present at this time, although I didn't miss out on the excitement because there were plenty of LR mechanics in the workshop to wind me up with a running commentary of 'Ooh', 'You don't want to do that!', It WAS the LEFT side you were meant to drill, wasn't it?!' aplenty!

Such comedians!! Rolling Eyes

Next, the existing air box needed modifying (You gotta love Safari for supplying all the bits needed though and good destructions!) by my favourite mechanic (yet again!).

I DID help with holding the box steady while he chopped chunks out of it, etc but unfortunately it is all pretty much a one-mechanic job!

Here are the pics of all that...

We hit a bit of a snag when it came to connecting the snorkel through the body to the air box though...

...because of the ABS we had to reroute the tubing underneath the system rather than through the original route as directed by Safari and the tubing doesn't quite fit - oops!

S'ok though...we'll source some more from a truck supplier, or the spare parts bin and finish the job ASAP!

Here you can see where it's just not quite working for us!!!

We DO have a finished external pic though, so all is not lost.

Hopefully the rest of the job should be finished one night this week.

Looking good!

I like yellow TJs. I would have gone that way myself, but it wasn't an option for the 2004 Sahara Autos, so I went for everything in black instead.

Notice that you mention ABS - does that mean you have discs all round?

Nah, still got drums on the back! ...but it's got a 6 speed manual gearbox and ABS brakes.

I guess the times they are a'changing, huh?!

I've wanted a yellow Jeep since I was 13 and fell in love with the yellow Rescue Jeeps they were using out in the States!

ABS would be welcome on my 2004 - to cut down on the occasional MT/R white knuckle braking moments in the wet. It'll be interesting to see how the sensors survive in the mud though.

Mims

you can still take the doors off no probs, even with the snorkel. 13mm spanner for the nuts at the bottom of the hinge pins and 10mm spanner for the bolts from the mount to the snorkel tube. Just free snorkel tube from mount so it can slip out of the way as you lift the door out.

The freedom of driving the Jeep topless and bare round the seat is great Laughing Laughing

Next on the agenda is an ickle lift, to get his belly off the ground a bit!

..and then bigger boots!

Will be sorting out the winch too, as it's still in bits under Wavey's work bench!!!

Not gonna be a big lift or big tires yet though...saving up to do all that properly in a couple years!!

Always a good idea to get your underside as far off the ground as possible, can't wait to see the pics.
