Hi oh wise ones.
I've got a chance of picking up a spare 300tdi with all the ancilliaries for diddly squat. However it was removed from its original home because it overheated and now has no compression.
Out of curiosity, what is most likely to have gone wrong as a result, and would it be worth a bit of a tear down with a view to reparing. Or should I just strip all the useful bits and junk the rest??????
Grant.

im no mechanic
but my guess is head gasket and you might have to get head skimmed
you didnt say if you need it to go into anything
a fully working 300 tdi is a useful lump and worth a few quid so b worth gettin it checked out

if you do the work yourself, a basic, headgasket change/head skim, new bolts, new piston rings and big end bearings will set you back around £200

it possibly overheated becouse the head gasket was failing.if it was that then that's why there's no compression.
seems a bit drastic though to remove the engine becouse of it. what's the rest of the story behind it?
never the less, check the head gasket, that's possibly all that's wrong with an otherwise good engine.
check the head for true also.

if you dont fancy the project ill take it off your hands
the water pump is very high on the 300 and a small amount of lost coolant will boil it very quickly when the pump doesnt get wet.
its most likely a HG
if the head is badly scored its scrap
a light skim should be okay though.

Hi,
Got a bit more info last night. Apparently, there was evidence of HG failure, before it was pulled out. It was only removed because he had another engine to go straight back in., and then personal problems etc took over......
I think I'll take it regardless, and pop the head off for a look....I need more jobs to do anyway..........
