I have a 02 Tdi ES auto Disco. Driving home tonight, up a hill, the revs continued to rise but I was getting nowhere. Then the cab filled up with smoke and then I smelt the gearbox oil. Behind me was a trail of auto transmission oil which stretched all the way down the hill!
I have only just got back so no time to look underneath. Is there a common fault here and/or what should I be looking for?

sounds like the torque converter has overheated and locked up.

Almost certainly a leak from one of the hose connections to the gearbox oil cooler - I have had this happen twice to my RRC
Take the hose off and take it to a hydraulic hose workshop and they will fix it for about £20
