The moderatrix moved this post from the unimog forum, so it lost a lot of it's meaning.
Yeah, XL's are michelins. They are heavy truck specific tyres, not something you'd see on a landy really.
Are they any good offroad? They are supposed to be, benzworld.org might be worth a try asking, there's a lot of mog guys over there who might know.

The Michelin XL is well known for working well in sand, but are not known for working well on rock. The XL was later upgraded and rebadged the XCL, a tyre used by most if not all of the worlds armed forces on a variety of vehicles, ranging from LR's to Unimogs,Reo's 4x4 MBenz trucks etc. Know of someone who uses them in 24R21's on Oshkosh in the desert and won't use anything else. What are you going to use them for?

If they are meant for heavy trucks and you plan on using them on a landy surly the sidewalls will be too stiff to flex properly off road?

I've had XLs and XCLs on my 101 and they are superb both on and off road.
They wear VERY quickly though so unless they are cheap dont bother.

I have always run xzl's on various landys and now disco.
ive never failed to be impressed, narrow and as others have said poor on rock , as for wearing quickly, i have had 60 K from a set of hard everyday use.
they aint cheap, and quite difficult to find 2nd hand unless you have a friend in MOD disposal.
they appear on the bay occasionally but for silly money
i bought six from paddocks once with balanced wolf rims for a mere 99 quid a corner.
as others have said military landys the world over use them , many govt agencies use them and i think Landy fit them as an offroad OE tyre.

XZLs seem to wear fine - its the older XLs and XCLs that wear down quick.
