Kershaw - yanky made (don't hold that against it Very Happy ) and very reliable.

Decent quality blades that hold an edge for ages. I've had a couple (not worn out - nicked! Crying or Very sad ) and have been well impressed. Not cheap, but hopefully it'll last me out!

Happy hunting!

Do you want locking or non locking?

Locking knifes are illegal for an every day cary as you need good cause to cary one. However if you can justify it then imo these are much safer knifes to use. For a locking knife I would recommend an opinel super sharp out of box and cheep enough not to have to worry about loosing it.

http://www.greenmanbushcraft.co.uk/cutting-tools/knives/opinel-no-9-pocket-knife-carbon-steel-blade.htm

Or non locking knifes are legal for an every day cary (as long as the blade is less than 3 inches) best non locker is imo the ukpk a knife designed as a legal uk carry by spyderco with input from the british blades forum.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Spyderco-Penknife-C94GP-UKPK-Knife/dp/B000NCEPKQ

For any more knife advise this is a great site.

P.s anything from benchmade are usually good and about the sharpest production edge you'll find.

I'd stongly recommend an (sorry about the spelling) opinion, french make.

Razor sharp, dirt cheap, have 1 blade generally with a shaped wooden handle and a twist lock ring on them.

Just reading the above post, yeah same ones as them Very Happy

i can whole heartedly vouch for the spyderco.

i have used and owed several over the last few years and for versatility and a razor sharp blade youd be hard pressed to find one for that money.

mine will cut an 11mm climbing rope in seconds

it has gralloched venison, pauched rabbits.

and an old one i wasnt precious about even cut a lid of a metal drum.

no flashy bits just utility.

have a look here for uk leagal carry knives
http://www.heinnie.com/jb83gn326502/Knives/-UK-...Carry/c-1-92-641/

I used to like opinel knives too, however you have to remember to lock them, I forgot with my last one & sliced my end of thumb down to the bone (they hold a nice sharp edge well Surprised) )when it closed on it, they have bee known to open in peoples pockets too when they get worn, they have modified the locking ring so uou can lock it closed now but you still have to remember to do it.

Hi Folks

I would agree with Kershaw as being very good, although I have problem with the locking mechanism on mine.

I cant see past buck Knives, amazing quality.

This is my main multi-purpose one.

I have a Kershaw Vapour with a partially serrated blade - its been my daily companion for years, always excellent, holds its edge well.

opened 6 tins of hotdogs with it the other weekend, still didn't need much of a sharpen to bring it back upto spec.

Sharpeners are always worth a mention - I use an edgemate - foolproof - ideal for me....

locking blade = illegal

Gatco Edge Mate - get a Spyderco Sharpmaker instead. Varying varying grit ceramic rods, that will put a razor hone and reset the edge. Can also propery sharpen the serations and do siccors etc.

http://www.spyderco.com/catalog/details.php?product=77

or learn t odo it free hand.

I'm terrible at sharpening stuff freehand... - hence the edgemate.

The Sharpmaker looks like a gorgeous bit of kit - but would be beyond my patience and budget!

I sell opinels! good knives Blades hold there edge and are carbon steel not the usual stainless steel rubbish. Also cheap. Only problem with them is you cannot use them as a screwdriver as the blades loose the point. Nothing a grinder cannot sort.

I've got a lovely Randall made Stiletto 2/6 handmade knife (proper handmade - they're currently quoting, on an order placed now, delivery for early quarter of 2014... Shocked ).

Do you think I'd get in trouble for it?!..... Very Happy

whether you like knives, or not, you've got to appreciate the workmanship. This isn't a Stiletto 2/6, but the hand forging process is the same - beautiful:

We have been using the Opinel knifes with carbon steel blades for years at home. They are easier to sharpen than any stainless steel blade, but they still hold an edge well. They do also get abused (used as scrapers and cutting down onto metal etc. Rolling Eyes) which will take the edge of any blade.

I also have a Victorinox Swiss army knife, but the scissor and bottle openers on that get used more than the blades.

another vote for opinel. or any other carbon steel, as opposed to stainless steel blade as they will hold a much finer edge for a lot longer.
only downside to carbon steel is it will rust if you dont look after it.

but also bear in mind that while locking blades are illegal to carry in public without good cause (i.e its part of your trade) so is any blade over 3" long. 'carrying in public' also covers carrying in your car.

Just wanted to post something about the legality of carrying knives in the uk, it isn't legal to have a knife on your person at all times. No matter how long the blade is and whether or not it locks open. It depends on where you are. If you are at a football match, at a wedding, in a pub etc. then no knife is legal to carry.
The knives described above as legal( less than 3 inch blade and not locking) are probably the best, most legal to carry, but you still need reason to have them.
I personally carry a folding buck knife with a four inch locking blade. I'm a tree surgeon so usually carry it for work, either that or I'm out shooting or fishing anyway, I have to be very careful not to take it to the pub though!!
