Hello there folks. Just a wee note to say hi. I got my vehicle about 2 months ago with 4000Km's on the clock I've done 2500 Km's now and things have got to change. I need more torque so the current engine and gearbox is coming out and a GMC V8's going in.
Apart from the obvious 'it's too big' 'won't fit' etc fact is, I've got one and it'll have to do. My dilema's more about which transmision to use. I have an LT77 on the V8 and I also have an LT95 with the short bellhousing from a 101 both of which are short enough to work. Dilema:
LT77 has 5 gears (it'll need all of them) and it's got the PTO so easy install, winch works and 5 gears. Problem: supposed to be very weak.
LT95 has 4 gears so 70Km/hr max but very strong. Fit and forget. Overdrive not an option because rear PTO needed for winch. It becomes an option if one uses the bottom (hard to find expensive) PTO from a 101 which sticks out the side.
LT85 bellhousing & 1st motion shaft too long.

Your thoughts please.

Hey there lindenengineering,
V6, good idea. Nope, didn't even consider it but only because I don't know anything at all about them. Tell me more please. My first choices were Nissan and Toyota 4.2s. I've used both extensively out in the bush and think they're great motors but they do lack a certain 'urge' and the whole package is longer and heavier than going the GM route. I'd also get my 5 gears and PTO by going that way. It could happen yet! The 4 cyl 3 litre turbo engine found in the forerunners was my third choice. Well, that would be second choice I suppose 'cos the 4.2s were equal 1st but all that only applies if I was being sensible. I like V8s. I like the noise, I like being able to drive just above the idle feeling for grip that I don't think I could do with any of the above mentioned motors. Comes down to personal choice I suppose. I'll know more if the damn rain ever stops up here!
I've got the engine mated to an LT77 just now with a Milner adaptor for starters just to play around but not yet pulled the cab off.
Jamie.
Other thoughts maybe for other topics are has anyone ever made the cabs tilt? and would it be possible to keep tracks on the rear bogie given the amount of articulation?

Tilt cab - WOW this I have to see.

As for the Engine look at the SMT conversion this is the route I intend to work with.

As a thought you have 29" to work with....

isle_of_man, I love yer Jeep man that's cool. I also really like your idea of what you did to the back of the volvo. Nice fabrication work too. You got any current pictures?
29" is loads for lots of things. Even the 4.2L Audi V8 would go in with a squeeze. Not much space mind but a wee push with the porta power would give room to spare.
The SMT conversion with the Merc engine is probably the easiest way to go but looking at your Jeep and what you've done already to your Volvo I think you might be disappointed with the power?
Rather than look at what was there (3L Volvo) I was looking at a 4.5ton vehicle with a power to weight ratio of 27.7 hp to the ton as simply not being adequate for driving on sand or hills. A fully loaded 110 Landrover with 300Tdi has around 30hp/ton and can only just cope with sand and soft going. A Toyota Land Cruiser or Patrol at a similar all up weight has almost 40hp/ton and makes sand driving so much easier. At a certain speed depending on ground conditions the extra oomph means the vehicle can ride over the ground instead of just grinding through it in 2nd low. Sure tyres makes a difference but lets just stay in the real world for a bit.
Also the displacement makes a huge difference. The Volvo engine makes its power very high in the rev range and has very poor torque at low revs. The same could be said of many small turbo diesel engines. Most make good torque at 1800 RPM but what about 1000rpm where quite often you want it? All good for motorway cruising but with the reduction in the axles we have to live with lets be realistic about road speeds. A good elastic band would nearly do.
At the end of the day do you want to approach that obstacle with a screaming engine and no control over spinning wheels and the resulting damage or idle up with torque to spare and very little chance of damaging anything? What's got more energy to dissipate through the drive line when a spinning wheel grips: small diesel flywheel at 3500rpm or big diesel flywheel at 1500rpm? That's what breaks things so that's why Im keen to put other than a 3.0L motor in. Please excuse my ramblings.
I'll also be wiser in a few weeks when I get my shed built and can get into it proper.
In the mean time I made some jack legs up to make it easier to get the rear body off and on. They slide into the handy holes at the sides and rear end. I've also just got a few sheets of hardboard to mock up a flatbed with and then make it up in 3.5mm steel chequer plate. My plan is that the body will be left at camp to allow the base vehicle to go and play and just be more useful in general. I'm drifting off topic but any ideas you have with the whole project I'm keen to hear.
Regards,
Jamie.
