Hello.
I have found an ex police Terrano for sale with relatively low mileage for its' age. Yes it is White.
Have any difflock members had experience of owning, driving or repairing ex police 4x4s?.
Does anyone have any recommendations as to whether or not an Ex Police Vehicle, especially a 4x4, would be a good buy?.
It is 6 years old and has done just over 70,000 miles which isn't bad for an ex police vehicle.
Cannot find out what it has been used for.
Hopefully not a pursuit vehicle but perhaps a motorway incident vehicle.
I am tempted but have heard stories about police vehicles getting hammered.
Thank you for any information.

Had a few ex-police vehicles!!very well maintained.just check for new panels etc!!normally a good buy.check the 4x4 works well.and the underneath is okay regarding off road damage, but I don"t think ot will of been abused!!sounds like a good buy with the mileage, mate!!

Thanks for the reply tommyh.
I am tempted to get the Terrano by the fact that I can buy this vehicle for a decent price even though it is above my intended budget at the moment.
However I have seen Terranos with similar mileage @ 70,000 but they are at least 3 or 4 years older than this one.
I will be having a long hard think about this one.
Thanks Again.

I'd say if it has low miles like that, then no way was it a motorway vehicle, they will clock that mileage every YEAR!!
More likely it was a countryside based vehicle or a command vehicle. Possibly even just for towing a PR Trailer???

My job takes me in to the garages of one of our local constabularies every week and I'd have no reservations about buying an ex police force vehicle. They are serviced to the book (or better) with geunine parts. Sure they get driven hard at times but no expense is spared on their maintenance. Even the ones that get do get crashed etc are rebuilt properly - and in the case of some vehicles probably better than they left the factory.
High milage motorway cars are probably in the best condition of all, they barely ever get to cool down, and as Castrol use to like to tell us 90% of engine wear is caused on cold starting.
Do you know which force it came from, might be able to find out a history on it for you - or someone else depening on the force.

Highways agency vehicles are leased and returned to the leasing company who dispose of them via their own showroom or auction.
After 18 months of Nissan pathfinders .......The HA do not deal with Nissan anymore. Never operated terranos

That is interesting.
I wonder why the Highways Agency no longer use Nissan Pathfinders?.
Do the HA use Shogun Sports or Isuzu Troopers by any chance?.
I have also seen a nice Shogun Sport for a similar price to the terranos.
The Shogun Sport seems bigger than the Terrano but with a smaller engine.
I wonder how the Terrano compares against the Shogun Sport?
Any Feedback will be welcome.
Thanks

Up here in the NW the Highways Agency have Mitsubishi Shoguns, Toyota Land Cruisers, and Landrover Discovery's. there is also 1 Mitsubishi people carrier thing. (For the Boss!)
They are all automatic, and has been stated, are leased. They usually cover over 300k miles in around 12-14 months then are replaced. due to the mileage covered, they tend to get serviced every 10 days or so.
The Landrover is the most capable, and best for the "larger" person, but does tend to need the most repairs due to niggly little faults. (I've seen them pull a 32 ton artic to the H/S, where the Jap ones would struggle)
The Pathfinder was deemed as "Dangerous" there were 2 main faults, the rear door lifted up (& not up enough) not outwards, and people kept hitting there heads on it, the other was when "giving it some" to get off the H/S in a hurry, it would inexplicably go into "get-you-home-mode" with a near total loss of power, resulting in a quick dive back to the H/S (if there still was one!!) and sitting for 15 mins whilst it reset itself.
Although the HA vehicles are very high mileage, they've not been thrashed, as we aren't allowed to speed over 70 mph. they've also been rigorously serviced.
