A couple of bottles of water.
Drink it, wash with it, top-up a leaky radiator, clean you headlights & number plate, etc...
Sounds stupidly obvious, but I've lost count of how many times I've given a bottle of water to an offroading companion.

I always carry water and telephone. Cash and a credit card close second. Legally I have to carry dirving licence, insurance and ownership docs (originals) as well as warning triangle and reflective jackets.
(also full tool kit, ropes/wires, compresor, camera, GPS, mp3, cloths for cleaning, selection of half eaten sweets dropped by the kids down the seats, a decent cigar in case of being stuck in traffic, spare bulbs, waterproof and fleece)

At this stage thinking in terms of local green laning, maybe pay and play, not crossing the sahara. So it's the basics that you always take, not the specialist gear I'm interested in.
Thanks all - useful suggestions, keep'em coming.

I guess for simple green laning, theres a good chance you'll be with another vehicle - your list can be short.
A shotrt list would therefore be:
- a couple of shackles
- a couple of ropes/strops
- Hi-Lift
- mobile
- credit card
- OS Map (verified with local council definitive map before you set off!)

As little as possible but enough to get you to safety....
So depending on whether help is 1/2 a mile away or 200 miles plan accordingly...

I carry most if not all whats been stated above. But for me something I cannot and couldn't do without is a bog roll and shovel.
Wasn't out Greenlaning today, but boy did it come in useful!

Brain. I never leave home without it. Gets me out of (and sadly into ) all sorts of problems.
And remember it's also not whats in the vehicle but the vehicle itself that needs prep. Servicing up to date? Have you had a good poke around the oily bits? Off roading puts extra stress on the vehicle so make sure everythings up to the job. A break down isn't the end of the world if you're just going out for the day playing but it can cause a few headaches and spoil a good day out
I would definately recommend a CB as well, assuming you are out with others that are CB equiped. They are great from a safety point of view but even better for the craic!

well, I live in E Anglia. The day they introduce the AA battery and on-line dating in S Lincs, it'll spark a revolution.
you could also use it as a shovel, but it tends to sound a bit dull afterwards...
guitars are fragile and a bit bulky. Harmonicas are great from a storage point of view, but have the disadvantage that I have no idea how to play one. I could be tempted over bagpipes, but only if there was somewhere secure to dump them as far from anywhere as possible ( cue jokes about A Flat Minor ).
I do have a banjo in my truck, yes. I particularly recommend A-scale ( 23" ) or tenor types as they fit crosswise behind the seats, which a standard 26" G-scale one doesn't. A modern remo-head banjo uke is even smaller, and has the advantage of being tuned similarly to a guitar, but the disadvantages that (a) people will laugh at you and (b) they sound pretty ghastly
the choice is yours!

as well as all the kit above
before you go out make sure you have and every one else has, good recovery points front and rear on all vehicals too many times have i seen people using ropes on tow balls and things come flying off.
also only use as many shackles but never to many DONT use them to join straps together or to connect winch hook to strap.
other than that good luck
an you'll be hooked afterwards
