Looks like they have done a very nice job with the panelling and painting. Not a ripple in sight.
Looking good, been following this thread for a while and Im loving it.
Have you ever taken it to the Dorset Steam Fair? I know its not a steam powered vehicle but they have thousands of vintage cars/bikes/trucks there too and the biggest auto jumble/market youve ever seen!
That's a 1000 miles round trip for me
Much more likely to go to Beaulieu which for Veteran cars (Vintage is 1919-1939) __________________________________ Poking the Grim Reaper with a stick then running away. The devil made me do it but God said it was okay with him.

will you be taking it to the steam fair on an a-frame?
No for a number of reasons.
1. I don't think I could connect it to my A-Frame without damaging the front axle
2. The bearings etc are unlikely to cope with 60 mph for 1000 miles (normal cruising speed is 24mph)
3. It would be a silly, albeit 100% legal method of transportation (it weighs ~650kg
However, the question gave me a giggle! __________________________________ Poking the Grim Reaper with a stick then running away. The devil made me do it but God said it was okay with him.

Okay, I have to admit to being incredibly frustrated now. Just off the phone from Dick Francis at The Carrosserie Company who has wound me up something rotten.
The car is looking utterly incredible and they have finished the body (>12 coats of paint!) and are starting on the wings, tank and bonnet.
The upholstery is likely to be a deep brown colour (green would be too much) finished in brass pin strips. They are not happy about my plan to take the body off again next winter to paint the chassis so they are going to rub down the outside of the chassis next week and put a couple of coats of chassis black so I don't have to go near it with a paintbrush. The running gear (axles, hubs, wheels) all have to be stripped and painted black in the fullness of time.
The next discussion is pinstriping, in a subtle dark red on the machining on the wings and on the body somewhere. Flooring will be coconut matting.
Time frame? body and chassis finished by late March, upholstered by late April.
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAaaaaaaarg
Still, time enough to get my garage built! Lottery win needed, please send immediately. __________________________________ Poking the Grim Reaper with a stick then running away. The devil made me do it but God said it was okay with him.

I dropped in to see the car this morning on my way to Newcastle (and back) and was stunned to see it almost complete with the new rear springs on order. I met the upholsterer and chose the leather and designed the tonneau covers.
Prepare to drool .... I did!
The next photo is of the tank which is from a 1912 De Dion fire engine. No fuel pumps so all gravity fed. Seriously.
The brasswork is incredible - look at the gear shift guide bracket!

yeah it looks fantastic,
whats wrong with gravity feed? they have used gravity feed on motorbikes for years..... if anything, one less thing to go wrong! __________________________________ No Mud to Deep, No Hill to Steep!

Did I say there's anything wrong with it?
I'm reminded of a story of the 100th Anniversary celebrations of a US car maker where they had a run of cars from their history do a run from the factory to a public park for a huge party. Some of the oldest cars, with gravity feed fuel lines, got half way there when they came upon a massive and steep flyover on the Freeway. Halfway up many cars stalled due to fuel starvation as the fuel level on the steep hill fell below the carb. After 3 attempts teh police closed the Freeway to allow the cars to climb the hill in reverse! __________________________________ Poking the Grim Reaper with a stick then running away. Funny!
I've got the new tax disc somewhere but as it doesn't even cost the postage to send it to me I thought SORNing it was a tad churlish __________________________________ Poking the Grim Reaper with a stick then running away. The devil made me do it but God said it was okay with him.
That looks excellent, don't know why but I havent read this thread since about october last year so lots of catchy uppy!!
One question; The rear number plate...
Does it need one, and if so how is it going to be mounted? I would assume you don't want to be drilling holes into your lovely new bodywork!! __________________________________ Andy

The rear number plate will either be square and mounted from the dumb irons (spring hangers) or from the rear crossmember __________________________________ Poking the Grim Reaper with a stick then running away. The devil made me do it but God said it was okay with him.

are you going to daylight mot it? or will you put some acetylene lamps on it? what sort of lighting did it have originally?
Luke
It just gets an MOT without any restrictions noted. It was made without lights, electrics, etc etc so I assume it doesn't need them for the MOT.
Suffice to say, the tester has a good old head scratch when he sees it. __________________________________ Poking the Grim Reaper with a stick then running away. The devil made me do it but God said it was okay with him.

As a descendant of the Onions family I can confirm that JC Onions Ltd was making bellows from the 1650's in "the shadow of Dudley Castle". Our research has shown that JC Onions Ltd was still operating in Birmingham in 1881 with John Collingwood Onions as a Director. By 1889, his brother, Simon Onions, remained a Director of the Company which by then was called "Alldays and Onions"
It may be of interest that the daughter of Simon Onions was founder of the Barber Institute, a world class art gallery in the grounds of Birmingham University. __________________________________ jlh

G'day John,
No, I don't think he was closely related to our Onions family. He was born in Bradford, Yorkshire and his parents were from Middlesex. Quite an artistic sounding name don't you think? I'll have to chase up some of his novels __________________________________ jlh

Here is the latest update.
The upholstery has been delayed by the leather not being good enough and it taking 2 weeks for new leather to arrive so Dave started an E-Type. Mine should be finished in the next 2 weeks then off to the coach builder for the springs to be adjusted for the overall weight and a few brass fittings to be installed.
I've promised Dave not to show too much detail of how the upholstery is done but you can see now how the mulberry leather goes with the green paintwork.
Latest news is that the VCC has been asked by the Classic car show at the NEC to have a display of Veteran cars and mine is one of the 10 proper old cars to be put on show in November. If you fancy having a good close look then pop along and see us.

I hope not, the leaking oil is bad enough! __________________________________ Poking the Grim Reaper with a stick then running away. The devil made me do it but God said it was okay with him.
