Running those sorts of tyre sizes you will be hard pushed to get any tyre footprint increase just by lowering the tyre pressure with such a light vehicle on them! Looking forward to see how this turns out.

i think they'll be alright, the axles are over half a ton not including the tyres, 2 winches and heavy duty bumbers (6" channel) roll cage and then the v8 & auto box etc. she'll be close to 3 ton, at least if I get a puncture I'll have no worries

I have a friend who has a U1300L with them on and at 10 psi they still look fully inflated! I have also seen a truck with a puncture that didn't flatten the sidewall at all!

Got a lot done over the last couple of weeks,
I went at the bulk head with a hammer just to see, as you do. The only thing holding it together was the rust, I could put my hand thru 1 of the holes so that had to go. Have a nice shiney newish 1 in its place. so while I was at the bulk head I decided that if I have to take that out I might aswell take the whole body off (sure its only a few bolts - ones that are all different metric/imperial bolts, pozi/flat/no head screws )
so now shes stripped to the chassis and ready for sandin & paintin.
I got a nice big box of brand new brake parts and seals with the Merc logo all over it , my new radius arms came back from being lazer cut ( didnt need a cad file, they just used my template) also gave a local machine shop the go ahead to start my new steering and track rod arm mounts for the hubs it was like christmas last week
So now I have a shed load of sandin and paintin and then it's rebuild time, just have to get a few quid together for the tyres now
The end is in sight

Gawd I hate sanding! The tub, roof and sides are all ready for primer, sanding took ages 80 grit first then guide coat then 180 grit then guide coat then 320 grit then guide coat the 320 again still have the doors and bulk head to do, reacon they'll be quick enough.

Its been a looooong while but -
Everything is finally stripped and fully sanded ready for prime and paint - ordered today
My custom made front radius arms fit - might need a slight kink for castor correction tho - no big deal.
Red poly bushes for the shocks will be in tomorrow.
front doors might be a bit of bother the ends are completly rotten so I'll cut out the rot and replace with
some new stuff have new sleves made up for the hinge bolts also.
Every time I go to do something new theres something else needs to be machined up or scrapped completly & remachined
But gettin close now!

Have finished most of the painting.
The front end is finished and have the front bulk head set
up for stripping and painting any sugestions on a brake servo
I dont think the defender one will be up to the job

i'll put up another progress report in the next few days, been busy sorting the doors usuall landrover quality rusty pieces of spit, somebody before me tried to fix them with fiberglass - Badly

planning on doing both, I've been talking with a friend in advertising said it might be worth looking into renting it out for trade shows, exibitions etc.
Basicly a company would rent it for their stand and put their own logo or design on it for a small fee as a crowd puller.
At the moment there is a 3.9 v8 in it but it'll have a gmc 6.2 v8 when funds allow so it will be an animal offroad

For the servo, Leyland roadrunner (I think it is) a guy on here has used one of them on a 404 for air over brakes IIRC - Have a read through this section. Could give you pretty effective braking?

Funny you're the third person to say that! I was also lookin at a Nissan 3.3 turbo diesel? anbody have any experience

3.3's yes but turbo no,very rare,i've never seen one here,where did you see this engine Irish?seperate transfer and a light truck engine/box would be my thinking-45/130 Leyland/Daf has a nice cummins diesel,might be a long combo but worth looking into

Their fd35 had a turbo there was 1 on ebay a while ago guy had it in his range rover, havent seen 1 since the 3.3 looks like the way to go for parts and servicing etc.

Not so sure,the 35 is a 3.5L,you may find it hard to mate this to a LR box(without spending lots,and why would you use LR box anyway)4.2 GR box may bolt on ..reckon you'll struggle to find either though

For the servo bit? If you search for posts by "Turnip" on the search function, then find "air brakes on a 404" there is some info there. The set up I have is not a servo but an air over hydraulic actuator - as used on standard Leyland Roadrunner / Daf 44. It is ever so effective but you will need a reliable compressor and it takes a while to get your head around the fact that there is not direct mechanical link between your foot and the shoes - only via air then fluid. Having said that - it gives wonderfully powerfull proportional brakes!

Thanks for that looks straight forward enough How is that going to fit on a defender bulk head, will there be enough room to fit where the old servo was? are there any other major issues? is it just a straight fit not quite plug and play - obviously there is some work to be done.

Ok - so this is probably easier than you think! First off you have to have a good air supply. I used the Leyland compressor which I modded to belt drive - thats the tricky bit. Once you have air - it is great because you can use it for everythng - difflocks being number 1!
Once you have air - the silver thing shown connected to the pedals is the actuator. Take out ALL your master cylinder servo etc and make your brake pedal push the tit on the silver thing. Use the Leyland master cylinder and mount it anywhere as long as it is vaguely horizontal - it is totally remote - you can put it on the roof if you like! The Leyland master cylinder has two hydraulic out lets - I put one front and one rear.
You also need to mount two air tanks somewhere in the chassis? The main one receives the air from the compressor and then distributes it to the other tank once it is full. All you need to do now is use the push fit nylon tubes (this is plug and play!) to connect from the tanks to actuator to master cylinder. The only other thing I used was the unloader valve actuator to "off load" the compressor when pressure is reached.And of course - tyre inflator - real air horns- 4 wheel hand brake for winching - etc etc! It sounds complex but it really is easy and effective - i CAN LEAD YOU THROUGH IT IF YOU WANT TO GIVE IT A GO?

When I started this project it was going to have two things - mog axles and a V8 engine. Now I dont really know which engine. I have a 3.9 v8 and zf auto - nice torque and auto but petrol.
So what enginge goes on a zf gear box without too much hassle or is there another engine and auto box out there for what I want?

Lexus V8 with it's own box and surf transfer would be better
Didnt realise you wanted auto,the lexus route would be nice but seems like a lot of work,i had thought about it myself for a project but i'm allergic to serious auto wiring -could keep eye out for an old blazer or simular Yank, might be easier to fit and sound the part to!! but i think stick with what you have for now(or like i said earlier get a seperate transfer and put whatever you like in!!)

Yea I think i'll stick with what I have I paid small money for it and know the guy and the defender he had it in before I got it, Its a nice clean engine. I want the auto because the gearing in the axles is so low compaired to Rover ones my arm would be in bits going up and down the gears off roading I think it would be a nicer drive with auto.

How do the hydraulics on the brakes work with the air, I've never worked on air brakes before, is there a master cylinder? enlighten me

get the whole lot.....they have cummins 6bt engine! google them
they have been put in land rovers before.
As far as i know daf 45's use a zf 5speed box, as fitted to dodge rams and ford f250's ect.
So the gear selector can be used from one of the yank pickups to put the gear lever in the right place for a 4x4.
You will have that much torque you wont need an auto, but it you still must theres lots of trucks/buses that came with 6bt's and allison auto boxes.

Hi Irish,
Yep there is a master cylinder - dual circuit Clayton unit. The easiest way to get your head around it is - Instead of your foot pushing the plunger on the master cylinder...the pushing is done by air on two seperate diaphragms. just like your servo but instead of your pump forming a vacuum on one side and atmospheric pressure helping you push - the air - 120 psi of it pushes the diaphragm and hence the master cylinder rod for you. How much it pushes is governed by how hard you push the actuator.
If you look at that write up - you can see the master cylinder bolted on the side of my chassis?
