Lads, have a pair of 406 axles I'm trying to fit to a 110 Laughing
Few questions
has any body done this? (am I mad)
the spigot is 18 spline, didn't measure it tho. Portal rover do a spiggot conversion for the 404 does anybody do them for the 406?
Can I unbolt the shafts either side of the diff and swap them around to suit the 110, if so will this affect the air lockers?
how hard are the king pins to replace?
I've attached a couple of pics their not great I'll get more.
Cant think of any more questions, had loads while stripping shocks, torque tubes etc.
Cheers

the only company that do a pinion conversion for the 406 axel is exsact in the states and they are not cheep ($750 each)
where as the 404 thers quite a few do them at resonable money
did you get the torque tubes/props with them cos you could do like me and get a company to turn the tubes down and machine a flange on the splined part of the prop
and you carnt just swap the axel tubes round for two resons one the airlocker shaft has a longer spline section so would need atleast two new shafts making up and if you just swap them round wont your front castor be out so you might as well cut the tubes

It would be easier to swap out the engine and transmission for something matching the Mog axles. 4.0l Cherokee's are cheap donor's now. Wouldn't solve the pinion issue but is certainly worth considering

Got everything with them, looked at the torque tubes with a view to doing
what you did, I used to be a tool maker so cant see a problem, any chance of a couple of pics.
are there any major issues to look out for in cutting the tubes once you mark them and keep them square for welding them back.
Cheers.

P38 range rover is all on the other side? Maybe quicker, may not be, but its a bigger V8 if the 110 is already well butchered? Plus lots of cheap ones about Very Happy

yea p38 is the way forward, but the steering on the mog axles is opposite.
Can the brackets holding the track rods be reversed - theres only 2 bolts holding them on Question

the steering arms can be swaped around (i think) but it would put the tie bar in front which wouldnt be a major prob because you just do a steering link like on a zook
as for cutting tubes theres some info on pirate 4x4 on cutting and changing offsets doing disc conversions and the pinion conversion

Ok have the Pinion conversion just about done,
the brakes are stripped and waiting on new parts.
Does any body here have any, or know where
I would get some blown up diagrams of 406 axles,
to make life easier stripping them. Checked all the usual
suspects with no joy.
Cheers

The back axle is just ready for fitting have to make
up a gard for the difflock air supply so i can finish
the bracket for the a frame,
have the pinion conversions done
has anybody taken out the king pins on the front
how hard of a job is it? when I get them out I can
strip the axle to turn the diff
(contraversial topic on Pirate 4x4)
I have been emailing Simon at
Atkinsons and have the brakes sorted,
I want disc brakes but at the mo the
budget wont strech that far and cant find
any decent pics on the web, if I could get
these I'd be laughing i could make these my self.
Stay tuned pics to follow
Brian m.

Heres my idea on this maybe a future project, why not unbolt the 110 body and mount on the mog frame and engine. More reliable and probably better offroad.

Hi Brian. Just read an article in the May 2008 issue of Land Rover Owner Internation about a chap who put Mog axles on his Disco 2. He had it done buy Straight Forward Engineering. They have all the jigs needed to shift the diff in line with the gearbox and so it it misses the the sump.

Seeing as you're in the UK give them a call and rack his brain for advice. 01490413517
e-mail: straightforwardsupplies.co.uk

Cheers

StraightForward are defunct, some of the stuff went to PortalRover as mentioned above. I think they only ever worked with 404 axles.

Try speaking to KAM they may be able to do something shaft-wise, it costs nothing to ask.

you could try rakeway or an enginering company that has the correct tools for the job(and judging by the 404 shafts exspect at least £200 a shaft)
and glad to see your getting every thing together

I think Neil at Rakeway does a lot of reciprocal work with KAM and that they do shafts for him.

Thanks for the reply's lads. I'm moving on at a pace now Very Happy
The back axle is ready to be fitted but still need to sort the
brakes. Both Pinions are converted- just need torque tube seals
(any idea on price of these, havent had a chance to look).
The front axle is nearly finished, I moved the diff to the defender
side and now just need to fit the shock mounts and radius arm
mounts. I priced a few companies for the new shaft and found a guy
in the states who makes them, €300 plus €80 to ship them.
This can wait til after christmas, the axle will drive with out the air locker working.
I got a 3.9 efi with auto box at a nice price too, V8 Twisted Evil
So now all I need is her indoors to stop looking for stuff to be done
before christmas and just let me go play in the shed Rolling Eyes
I have loads of pics but their still in the camera and phone, they'll be up soon.

Progress report, Its been ages since I've posted anything here so -
Got the engine and gear box out of the 110 to make way for the V8
then braught her for a full under body wash, She's getting moved from the Bros garage tomorrow to my workshop to fit the axles and start all the metal fab etc.

got it jacked up to make it easier to work on, got the back axle off ready for the new Mog one, I'm goin to have to remachine my front pinion conversion it's 23" at the moment, the landy diff is 16" long so I can loose nearly 6". the spring seats have to be finaly fixed in position, there's 40mm in the differance then the brackets for the trailing arms need to be done but not until the axle is under all should take about half a day.

http://i897.photobucket.com/albums/ac176/fearat...rakes/Axleoff.jpg
http://i897.photobucket.com/albums/ac176/fearat...0Brakes/Axle2.jpg
All the old defender bits are off, back step, tow bar, shock mounts on the chassis (to make way for the new -2" mounts) A frame for the axle.
And then she got a coat of rust proof primer, the chassis is nearly mint, 1 rust hole on the drivers out rigger, easy fix. and 2 spots each side of the rear X member this is coming off and will be replaced with either 8 0r 10mm channel so no major head aches

And I'll be gettin another half day at her again tommorow
So hopefully the rear axle WILL be fitted by tea time, watch this space

Got the back axle under today for 1st fitting still needs a bit of work. Its not sitting right, looks like the original mog trailing arm brackets are too long and the making the diff sit at the wrong angle so I might have to use the defender ones instead, no big deal

Finally got the back axle on.Got the trailing arms turned down and retapped the shock mounts are welded on and the panard rod bracket is tacked in position - I might go for the aframe ball joint instead. Got the feul tank off this evening, got a new big beefy rear X member started and 1st fitted but only after grinding, chesling and beating the livin crap out of the old 1.
The new 1 is made of 10 X 150 channel the same shape as the old but 5" longer a side to take the roll cage and to cover the 15" tyres. I need to make up some templates of the chassis rails for the steel to strenghten where the X member is welded and repair the rust patches.

Tormented myself yesterday and priced a set of Michelin XML tyres the same as the army use -€1050 plus vat a tyre I nearly fell off the phone

Yea, it will also be used to hang the tubing to form the mud guards/tree sliders. I made it that size because there will be a winch on the back also and either 2 or 4 recovery points not sure yet, the front bumper is 100 x 50 x 6

Got the front axle on today - ish
welded on my new shock/spring mounts and radius arm brackets
have to make up radius arm templates so I can get some new ones Lazer cut.
I fitted the double shock turrets backwards - no big deal

it all has to be strippped after 2nd fitting to be cleaned and painted,
Have more bling ordered - Terrafirma Hd springs front and rear.
I've decided to over haul the brakes its a nightmare tryin to get parts without a chassis no. and the price of parts is scary pricing stuff in Germany and UK - if she finds out i'll be killed

What are you looking to run as a wheel/tyre combo when you have finished?
Are you sticking with drums or binning them?
Have you tried Atkinson Vos for parts without a chassis number?
