thanks for mpg replies i probably will buy a 4.0 cherokee but have read somewhere that the SE is better for towing as it has bigger oil cooler/radiator?

is this true?

i will be towing a caravan with a gross weight of 1080kg so its it worth getting the SE?

thanks

Far as I can see the only thing that will make any difference is a transmission cooler if you go for a 4 litre. Check the front of the rad and you'll see it - it's a small radiator about 12" x 3". I've got a manual 4 litre (don't ask) that I've towed with and you can fry eggs on the transmission tunnel in hot weather!

Apart from that make sure your cooling system is in tip-top condition: flushed, new pipes as necessary (don't discard the spring things inside some of them as they keep the bore open) and possibly a new thermostat & water pump. £50 should be enough to cover a home service. Cherokees are notoriously hot motors, and need to be kept an eye on. If it does start to go to the red line, change out the thermostat when you come to fix the problem, as it will be goosed by overheating once.

according to my owners manual (95) the SE had a bigger rad (thicker core), bigger oil cooler and a few lectric add ons for towing. I have an SE which got very hot over the past summer, when i replaced the top hose which burst i back flushed the system, this disturbed the crap and a week later took out the water pump, this was replaced as was stat and serpentine etc. ran a lot cooler after that. By the way you need to remortgage for hoses Shocked

I gave my 94 4.0l SE high output serious abuse towing never had any temperature problems with engine or gearbox even with trailers weighing 3 tonnes during the hottest summer days on steep hills and with the air con on.
